Crispy felt… and a holy valley that tells you everything you need to know.

Pay particular attention to the valley section — that cut running straight through it was made when the original installers cut the tiles in place, most likely with a Stihl saw. This is a definite no‑no. We never, ever do this.

This is exactly why: one slip and it’s over. 🙈😡😡
Shortcuts like this put both the roofer and the roof at risk.

Not every chimney can be saved.

At J.E.M. Roofing, we always aim to preserve a structure where possible — but in this case, both chimneys had dropped internally and the remaining stack was simply too far gone. When the internal structure has collapsed and severe cracking has spread through the stack and render, the safest option is full removal.

Here’s what we found:

-Severe cracking to the stack and render

-Internal structure had collapsed and failed

-Beyond repair — removal was the safest solution

Not every chimney can be saved. 🏠

We always try to preserve existing chimneys where possible, but in this case the external cracking was only part of the problem. Once we opened it up, the internal structure had already collapsed and the remaining brickwork was simply too far gone to repair safely.

The photos tell the story – sometimes the safest and most practical solution is to remove the chimney and make the roof weatherproof.
