A busy weekend in my new build garden.

These are all the garden jobs I did👇

🌸lift all my summer annuals which have begun to develop powdery mildew
🌼 stripped my sunflower stems & fennel stems to turn into garden stakes
✂️cut and dried more strawflowers
🫠said goodbye to a lot of my dahlias as they’ve done so poorly
🧽cleaned & tidied my greenhouse!
🌱tried to pot on some ammi from the lawn but the ground is too hard so I had no luck 😩

I’ve just made my first big bulb order so I thought I’d share some of my bulb planting hot takes 😜

I’ll be planting my daffodils, alliums, hyacinths & crocus later this month (if the bulbs arrive in time, if not, next month.)

Then I’ll be planting my tulips in winter when the ground is a lot cooler.

So when I’ve got everything I’ll make lots of videos on how and when I’m planting mine.

October is here & these are all (or some as I’m sure I’ll find more) of the garden jobs I’ll be doing…

🌷 I’ll start ordering all my spring bulbs this month
💜 I’ll be planting my allium bulbs
🌼 I’ll be planting my daffodil bulbs
🌸 I will be lifting my dahlia tubers, which is a little early - usually I’d do this in November but it’s just becuase mine have been a disaster 😆
🌱 I’ll begin my autumn sowing - starting with sweetpeas
🪴 I’ll start prepping all my pots for bulb planting, refreshing the soil with some new compost
💜 I’ll be mulching all my beds & borders to felt feed the soil over winter & protect any tender plants
🌱 finally I’ll be saving seeds to plant next year

As I say, I’m sure I’ll find more jobs to do but this is just what I plan on doing.

My final potato harvest…

& I know what you’re going to say, I should have waited for the whole plant to die. But I promise I did then suddenly a new green bit grew. I am also impatient so… here we are.

But… I think this is the best harvest so far 😆 what do you recon?

I did something drastic 🫣😆

After the hot weather followed by rain the hot again, my poor zinnias have suffered from the dreaded powdery mildew, so I wanted to pull them up before it spreads. And also it means I can slowly start prepping my pots for spring bulb planting from next month.

It’s a shame some of the colour is gone but it’s exciting to start planning my spring garden.

I thought I’d reflect back on my summer garden on what went well & what maybe didn’t work out as I’d have hoped.

But the important lesson here, especially if you’re new to gardening is every year is different in the garden, and a lot of the reasons things don’t do so well is completely out of your control. So I’ve learnt to embrace it & learn from it. Next year’s garden starts now so I’m already planning on what I want to take with me vs leave behind. But who knows what Mother Nature will throw at us next year, so I’m not going to overthink anything 😆

I’d love to hear what has worked well vs hasn’t worked out in the comments because anyone new to gardening I’m sure will feel reassured that all of us aren’t tending to “perfect” gardens. There’s no such thing!

It’s nearly bulb planting time and I am so excited. I’ll be sharing all my best advice for bulbs very soon!

I haven’t started my autumn sowing yet, but my garden has started it for me 😆😆

I just had to share my new ammi majus lawn, as they have self-seeded everywhere. I really need to mow the lawn, but must prick these out first as they’re already getting so big. Since filming this they’ve doubled in size 😆😆
