ππͺ EDUCATIONAL POST MONDAY WITH MATT THE LOCKSMITH... BECAUSE SOME OF YOU ABSOLUTE WEAPONS NEED A LESSON! ππ
NO PHOTOS, NOTHING CATCHY, JUST BLOODY READ AND TAKE IN THE INFORMATION!
Right, you magnificent door-abusing specimens...
Today's lesson is:
HOW TO ACTUALLY USE YOUR DOOR WITHOUT COMPLETELY FU***NG IT!
You know that fancy lift-to-lock handle with a multipoint locking mechanism?
Yeah, that one in your door!
The one you've been slamming, forcing, yanking, and generally treating like it owes you money for the last five years. π€¦ββοΈπ
Here's how the bloody thing is supposed to work:
π 1οΈβ£ CLOSE THE DOOR GENTLY
It's a door, not the bastard child of a prison cell and a pub toilet.
You don't need to launch it into the frame like you're trying to wake the neighbours three streets away.
Repeatedly SLAMMING THE F**K OUT OF IT can cause alignment issues and put unnecessary strain on the hinges, keeps and locking mechanism.
Close the door properly against the frame.
That's it.
No running jump required.
π 2οΈβ£ LIFT THE HANDLE FULLY
Once the door is closed, lift the handle firmly until the multipoint locking points engage.
FIRMLY.
Not like you're trying to rip the bastard off the door.
If you're hanging your entire body weight off the handle while making noises normally associated with moving a washing machine...
something probably isn't right. π
π 3οΈβ£ TURN THE KEY π
Once the handle is fully lifted, turn the key and lock the door.
Congratulations!
You've successfully operated a multipoint locking mechanism without treating it like a fu***ng arcade machine. ππ
---
π¨ NOW PAY ATTENTION, YOU DOOR-BULLYING BELLENDS...
β DON'T SLAM THE DOOR
Every violent slam sends unnecessary shock through the door, hinges, keeps and mechanism.
Eventually something is going to say:
βF**K THIS. I'M DONE.β
And that's when you'll be stood outside in your slippers at 9:47pm wondering why your door suddenly hates you.
It doesn't hate you.
You've spent years abusing the poor bastard. π
β DON'T FORCE THE HANDLE
If the handle is stiff...
STOP.
If it won't lift...
STOP.
If you're having to use your shoulder, knee, hip and the combined strength of three pissed-off builders...
FOR F**K'S SAKE, STOP! π
Forcing it can turn a simple adjustment or servicing issue into a failed gearbox or multipoint mechanism.
That's when your little problem starts developing an expensive personality.
β DON'T PUSH THE HANDLE DOWN WHEN IT'S LOCKED
This one is a major pet peeve and is especially for the door knobbers.
You've lifted the handle.
You've turned the key.
THE DOOR IS LOCKED.
So why the f**k are you pushing the handle back down?
What are you expecting?
A secret second door?
A cash prize?
A standing ovation?
LEAVE THE FU***NG HANDLE ALONE! π€£
Pushing the handle down against a locked mechanism puts unnecessary strain on the gearbox and internal components.
---
π§ MATT'S GOLDEN RULE:
CLOSE IT GENTLY.
LIFT THE HANDLE.
TURN THE KEY.
LEAVE THE HANDLE ALONE.
If your UPVC door is already stiff, catching, grinding, difficult to lift or requiring a shoulder, knee, hip and a small prayer to lock...
It's telling you something.
Don't wait until the mechanism completely s**ts itself.
A service and adjustment could potentially sort the problem before you're looking at a failed mechanism.
Because let's be honest...
Your door probably isn't your enemy.
You're just a fu***ng terrible owner. ππ
And if you've read this entire post while thinking:
βF**k... I do every single one of those.β
Don't worry.
You're exactly why I wrote it. π€£
