Ash dieback is creating a growing management and safety challenge across housing developments, commercial estates and managed outdoor spaces.
The fungal disease causes progressive decline in ash trees and, in severely affected trees, can leave branches and timber increasingly brittle and at risk of failure.
What should you look out for?
• Thinning foliage and crown dieback
• Dead or dying branches
• Early wilting or leaf loss
• Dark lesions on branches or stems
• Increasing deadwood within the canopy
• Fungal decay around the base of the tree
The risk becomes particularly important where affected trees are close to roads, footpaths, buildings, car parks and public spaces.
However, felling isn't always the first answer.
Symptoms can have other causes, and where it is safe to do so, retaining healthy or tolerant ash trees has ecological and landscape benefits. A professional inspection can determine whether monitoring, remedial tree works or removal is the appropriate response.
