Made a start with planting up standard and intermediate daffodils on Sunday and again today. Most of my effort was on competition Daffodil planting but towards the end of the day, I did a few pots of pretty garden Daffodils.
Don’t be fooled I’ve got the loads more to plant but I will hop on stories later this week to show you how I keep them over winter. No plunge bed this year as I found it didn’t make any marginal difference to the performance in competition. In fact, the one that when me the RHS show was grown in one of my raised beds….

So disappointed. A significant amount of my garden daffodils have been affected by Narcissus bulb fly, and I’m absolutely gutted.

What started as a few bulbs looking rotten at the basal plate turned into me cutting them open and finding larvae inside. And then I started checking more. And more 😔

Without doubt they are fantastic pollinators and predators of aphids. However, their larvae feed on bulbous plants and can/will cause considerable damage.

Don’t rely on the catalogue photo alone, please. On the whole suppliers are good at showing a true reflection of the spring flower. But do read the description and look for real-life photos to see how the bulbs actually grow.

A little research before you buy can make all the difference to your future spring garden.
