⚡️ Job completed today – EV charger fault diagnosis & repair ⚡️

Today we attended a property where a 7.4kW EV charger had completely lost power and the RCBO would not reset.

On inspection, we traced the fault to a separate distribution board supplying the charger. The main supply neutral had severely overheated and burnt out.

The cause was identified as an undersized cable feeding the board, combined with an oversized protective device. With the EV charger drawing a high continuous load, this allowed the cable to overheat over time, ultimately leading to failure at the neutral termination and damage to the RCBO.

🔧 Work carried out:
✅ Fault located and made safe
✅ Old distribution board replaced with new
✅ Circuit now correctly protected by a 32A RCBO
✅ Meter tails renewed
✅ System checked for compliance with BS 7671

EV chargers place a sustained demand on electrical systems, so correct cable sizing and properly rated protection devices are essential to prevent overheating and potential fire risks.

Need a new fuseboard?

Today we completed a full consumer unit change, replacing an outdated consumer unit that posed several safety risks.

The old unit was made from combustible material, had no RCD protection for cables buried in walls and was fitted with incorrectly sized MCBs. All these factors increasing the risk of electric shock and potential fire hazards.

The new installation now provides full RCD protection and correctly rated devices, bringing the property up to current safety standards and giving the customer peace of mind.

If your consumer unit is outdated, it might be time to upgrade. Safety always comes first.
