Wellโ€ฆ sometimes what a geologist does on a weekend is actually geology!๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿชจ
This weekend I swapped exploring new places for my PPE and returned to site, providing weekend support for an existing client on a major infrastructure project in the Midlands. ๐Ÿšง๐Ÿ—๏ธ
My role this time is working as a coring rig supervisor, overseeing the works on site and making sure the investigation is carried out safely and in accordance with the required scope and procedures. ๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ“‹
Ground investigations are not always Monday to Friday. Infrastructure projects often need work to be carefully coordinated around access restrictions, traffic management and other activities โ€” and sometimes that means weekend working. ๐Ÿšง๐Ÿฆบ
It is also a nice change from my current long-term project and an opportunity to support another client and work on a different type of site investigation. ๐Ÿชจ๐Ÿ”
Not every weekend involves castles, coastlines or geological walksโ€ฆ sometimes it is hard hat, hi-vis and another day on site!๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I have a habit of filling every minute of my weekends, and sometimes I don't realise I've run out of energy until I completely exhaust myself. This weekend I decided to do something different. Rather than rushing around, I found a peaceful place to catch up with the administrative side of running Bath Geo-Environmental ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“‘ while enjoying a completely different environment. โ˜•๐ŸŒฟ
๐Ÿ›๏ธ This beautiful building was originally the chapel of Rauceby Hospital, formerly part of the Kesteven County Asylum, built in the early 20th century. While the hospital represents an important chapter in the history of mental healthcare in Lincolnshire, the chapel has been carefully restored and given a completely new purpose as a welcoming cafรฉ and community space.
๐Ÿชจ As a geologist, I couldn't help admiring the building itself. The local limestone contrasts beautifully with the traditional red brickwork, while the impressive timber roof structure creates a bright and peaceful atmosphere. Limestone has been one of Britain's most important building stones for centuries. Its durability, workability and local availability made it an ideal material for churches, public buildings and historic architecture throughout the country.
๐ŸŒ One of the things I enjoy most is seeing how geology becomes part of everyday life. We often think of geology as cliffs, mountains or quarries, but it is also present in the buildings we work in, the streets we walk along and the places where history has unfolded. Every stone records millions of years of Earth's history while also preserving part of our cultural heritage.
๐Ÿ’ญ Sometimes changing your surroundings is enough to recharge your mind. This weekend reminded me that even while catching up with business administration, geology is never far awayโ€”it is written into the very stones of the buildings around us.

During those early years, I gained invaluable experience in:
๐Ÿ”น Sampling, preparation, and testing of soils, rocks, and materials in the lab, following British Standards (BS).
๐Ÿ”น Conducting tests like Plastic Limits, Liquid Limits, Wet & Dry Sieve, Particle Density, Triaxials, Vicakits, Flow Channels, Bud Balance, Bleed Testsโ€ฆ you name it!

๐Ÿงฑ These hands-on experiences taught me not only the technical aspects but also the importance of:
โœ” Accurate data collection to avoid NCR (Non-Conformance Reports).
โœ” Training and mentoring others in these methodologies.
โœ” Better soil description techniques based on primary and secondary constituents.
โœ” Amending field logs to align with lab results.
โœ” Scheduling chemical and geotechnical samples and comparing them against field data for solid geotechnical interpretation.

What many donโ€™t see? The coordination between departments and subcontractors to meet tight deadlines, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

This early stage shaped my understanding of the complexities of geotechnical work, and Iโ€™m proud of the foundation it gave me to contribute effectively to larger projects.

This weekend I visited the stunning Melbourne Hall Gardens, one of England's finest historic gardens and a hidden gem in Derbyshire.
Originally designed in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the gardens combine formal terraces, ornamental lakes, sculptures, ancient trees and colourful borders, creating a landscape that has evolved over more than 300 years. Every corner offers a different perspective, making it easy to understand why they are considered among the country's most beautiful historic gardens.
As a geologist, I always enjoy seeing how landscape design works alongside the natural terrain. Water features, mature trees and carefully shaped landforms create a balance between geology, nature and history that has stood the test of time.
Summer is definitely the best season to explore places like this. Long evenings, colourful gardens and a little curiosity are all you need for a perfect weekend.

After spending the last few months describing sedimentary structures such as ripple marks, desiccation cracks and cross-bedding in ancient rocks๐Ÿชจ , it was fascinating to return to the coast and observe the same processes shaping sediments today.
One of the fundamental principles of geology is Uniformitarianism (Actualism)โ€”the idea that "the present is the key to the past." By understanding how sediments are transported and deposited in modern environments like the Humber Estuary, we can interpret how sedimentary rocks formed millions of years ago.
The Humber Estuary is one of the UK's largest estuarine systems, where rivers meet the North Sea. The interaction between tides, currents and rivers continuously deposits sand, silt and clay, creating extensive salt marshes and mudflats while providing an internationally important habitat for wildlife.
One thing I wasn't expecting to find was that this beautiful coastline also includes the Donna Nook and Theddlethorpe Air Weapons Range, where sections of the coast are still used by the RAF for military training. It's an unusual combination of geology, ecology and military history all in one place.
There is something special about seeing modern geological processes in action๐ŸŒŠ. Every ripple, every layer of mud and every tidal channel is helping us understand rocks that were formed millions of years ago.

Karst-free sandstone landscapes & quartz-rich geomorphology

๐Ÿชจ Geological setting The Fontainebleau forest, near Barbizon, is part of the Paris Basin and is dominated by the Fontainebleau Sand Formation (Oligocene):

๐ŸŸก Extremely pure quartz sandstones (โ‰ˆ95โ€“99% quartz)
๐ŸŸค Strong silica cementation forming very resistant rock
โšช Massive structure with no foliation or bedding clearly visible at outcrop scale
These deposits originated from ancient coastal and shallow marine environments.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Geomorphology & weathering The landscape is characterised by:
๐Ÿชจ Rounded boulders (โ€œchaos de blocsโ€) ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Spheroidal weathering along joints
๐ŸŒฒ Isolated sandstone masses within forested terrain

Differential erosion and joint-controlled weathering shape the distinctive morphology. The sand in this area is:
โœจ Highly reflective due to quartz grains
๐Ÿ” Often mistaken for mica, but composed almost entirely of silica
๐Ÿ–๏ธ A key source for high-purity industrial sands in the region

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Engineering geology relevance These sandstones present:
๐Ÿ’ช High strength due to silica cementation โš–๏ธ Variable stability depending on jointing and weathering
๐ŸŒŠ Permeable units influencing groundwater flow
They are important for both construction materials and ground behaviour assessment.

๐ŸŽจ Geoheritage & cultural context The same landscape inspired the Barbizon School (19th century), where artists such as Millet and Rousseau studied light, texture and natural forms โ€” closely linked to the geological setting.

โšก Why is it important? Fontainebleau is a key example of how composition, cementation and weathering control both landscape evolution and engineering properties.

Another week on site and the detailed geological logging continues.
After logging dozens of metres of the Oxford Clay Formation and describing thousands of discontinuities, it is a good reminder that engineering geology is as much about consistency and attention to detail as it is about technical knowledge.
Every fracture, weathering boundary, fossil and lithological change contributes to building a reliable geological model for the client.
As the project has progressed, one thing has really stood out to me. Sometimes it is worth taking a step back and assessing how we work, not just the ground beneath our feet.
After several long days of logging, my neck was starting to feel the effects of spending hours describing core. I raised this concern during to Mike and he responded immediately and adapted the logging cabin to improve the working setup. The result has made a huge difference to both comfort and productivity, especially during the recent hot weather.
In over 14 years working in engineering geology, I can honestly say this is one of the best logging cabin setups I have worked in. A huge thank you to Michael Dickin and Logging Kabins for providing such a well-designed and practical working environment. It really demonstrates how good health and safety is about listening, adapting and continuously improving.
I'm proud to continue supporting LincsRes on behalf of Anglian Water, helping deliver high-quality geological logging throughout this project.
