Ever noticed how hot an old halogen downlight get so hot?
Halogen lamps produce a significant amount of heat as well as light.
That heat isn't only something you notice underneath the fitting. A lot of it ends up above the ceiling, where the fitting, lampholder, wiring and surrounding materials are located.
On older installations, I sometimes find:
⚡ Brittle or heat-damaged lampholders
⚡ Discoloured fittings
⚡ Deteriorated cable ends
⚡ Old transformers still above the ceiling
⚡ Insulation sitting too close to unsuitable fittings
Modern LED downlights run considerably cooler and use much less electricity.
That doesn't mean every halogen installation is automatically unsafe, but if your downlights are old, regularly blowing lamps or showing signs of heat damage, they're worth having checked.
