Did you know International Owl Awareness Day falls on 4th August every year - aiming to educate and encourage understanding of owls, their importance in the ecosystem and the habitat they need. Here at the Birdbox Company we build homes for our UK owls: from the beautiful barn owl to the iconic tawny with its tell tale Twit Twoo call (which is actually the call and response between a male and a female). Could you find room in your garden, park or farm to help these beautiful birds?

The Big Butterfly Count 2026 is here! 🦋

From now until 9 August, spend 15 minutes outside counting the butterflies you see and help us take nature's pulse.

With 80% of UK butterfly species in decline, it’s never been more important to understand how our insects are responding to climate change and habitat loss.

The best part? Anyone, anywhere can take part. No lab coats. No science degrees. Just 15 minutes of your time. ⏱️

Don't forget that with the recent heat it is important to make sure your garden wildlife has access to water. Clean bird baths are great for the birds, and a small garden pond is also perfect (but make sure there are easy escape routes for hedgehogs). Leaving a shallow dish of water will help all the wildlife in your garden.

Take a look at our website to see our full range of wildlife nestboxes to help you encourage and care for your wild neighbours! www.thebirdboxcompany.com

We've had a number of queries recently about male Blackbirds seen feeding juveniles in gardens.

In most cases for garden birds, both parents will feed the chicks. For Blackbirds, once the chicks have fledged and left the nest, this often gives the female an opportunity to get busy preparing for her second or third brood. This leaves the male to look after the larger chicks while she starts another nesting attempt - by the time they hatch the older chicks from the previous brood should be independent.

If you have nests in your garden, you can record them to our Nesting Neighbours survey to help us understand how birds use gardens for breeding attempts. And of course, once the chicks have left the nest, you can record them for Garden BirdWatch to help us monitor how and why bird populations are changing around the country.
