Another couple of jobs ticked off this week 🔥

This one involved fitting a bird guard to help keep the chimney protected and working properly.

Birds getting into chimneys can cause all sorts of problems with nesting and blockages, while an anti-downdraught cowl can help where wind blowing back down the chimney has been an issue.

It’s always important to use the right cowl for the chimney and appliance, rather than just fitting a standard one.

💨 SMOKE EVACUATION TEST 🔥

A smoke evacuation test is a simple but important part of checking that your chimney or flue is working as it should.

In this video, you can see us carrying out a smoke test to check that the smoke is being safely drawn up the chimney and discharged correctly — rather than spilling back into the room.

A good chimney isn’t just about being swept clean. Correct draw, safe evacuation and a sound flue are all important parts of safe solid-fuel appliance use.

⚠️ Poor smoke evacuation can indicate problems such as:
• Blockages or restrictions
• Poor chimney draw
• Flue or chimney defects
• Insufficient ventilation
• Problems with the appliance or installation

THIS COULD BE BLOCKING YOUR CHIMNEY RIGHT NOW… 🚨

🪶 A bird’s nest inside a flue might look harmless — but it can become a serious safety issue.

A blocked or restricted flue can stop smoke and combustion gases escaping properly, potentially causing smoke or carbon monoxide to enter your home.

And it’s not just birds…

❌ Soot
❌ Tar and creosote
❌ Debris
❌ Fallen masonry
❌ Nesting materials

…can all restrict a flue.

🔥 AND HERE’S ANOTHER PROBLEM WE COME ACROSS…

This plasterboard has been used as a register plate.

⚠️ Plasterboard is not a suitable material for use as a register plate around a solid-fuel appliance.

A register plate is exposed to heat from the appliance and flue, so it needs to be made from a suitable non-combustible, heat-resistant material and installed correctly.

The same applies to materials used around a stove or fireplace — just because something is commonly used in building work doesn’t mean it’s suitable for use next to a hot appliance.

🏠 Your chimney might look perfectly fine from the outside, but you can’t always see what’s happening inside.

That’s why regular sweeping and, where appropriate, a CCTV inspection can help identify problems before they become dangerous.
