TWO WEEKS TO GO!

I’m delighted to announce that in just two weeks I’ll be opening Hard Ground Printmakers: From the Collection at Langstane Gallery, Aberdeen.

Private View: Thursday 27 August, 6–9 pm
Exhibition: Saturday 29–Sunday 30 August 2026
Langstane Gallery, WASPS Langstane Place, Aberdeen

This special exhibition brings together selected works from the Hard Ground Printmakers publishing collection alongside my own work, including On Cloud Nine—recently exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in the major exhibition Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now—and linocuts and current silkscreen prints from my African Fe**sh series.

The exhibition features work by Hakim Onitola, RUN, Billy Mandindi, SABAPRODAKTION, David Delemano and Nicolaas Maritz—artists connected through Hard Ground’s long history of independent printmaking, publishing and creative collaboration.

Founded in Cape Town in 1989, Hard Ground Printmakers continues today as my independent, autonomous and mobile publishing workshop, operating from my WASPS studio at Langstane Place in Aberdeen—the Granite City.

The exhibition runs concurrently with my Jonathan Comerford: Printmaking Sans Frontiers presentation at Stand 13B, Aberdeen Art Fair 2026. It promises to be an exciting weekend of original printmaking across two Aberdeen venues!

I look forward to seeing you!

ABERDEEN ART FAIR 2026
I’ll be back at Aberdeen Art Fair this August with Printmaking Sans Frontiers — Stand 13B.
This year I’m bringing together work representing more than 30 years of international collaboration in printmaking — from early post-Apartheid South African editions through to new work produced in 2025–26.
Expect linocut, etching, intaglio, silkscreen, lithography and mixed media, with work by more than 30 artists from across South Africa, Europe, the UK and the USA, alongside a selection of my own recent prints and mixed-media pieces.
📍 Aberdeen Music Hall, Union Street
Private view @ 6pm.
📅 Friday 28 – Sunday 30 August 2026
🎟 Free Entry
📌 Stand 13B
ALSO SHOWING @ the LANGSTANE GALLERY
Coinciding with the Art Fair, I’ll be extending the exhibition into Langstane Gallery at WASPS Langstane Studios, where there is room to show some of the larger and more unusual works from the Hard Ground Printmakers archive and Printmaking Sans Frontiers collection.
These include work by Hakim Anitola, Giacomo aka RUN, Billy Mandindi and Robert Siwangaza, alongside my current linocuts, including work recently shown at the RSA in Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now.
Two venues. One weekend. More than three decades of printmaking, collaboration and exchange.

ABERDEEN ART FAIR 2026 · STAND 13B
Jonathan Comerford · Printmaking · Mixed Media

I’ll be returning to Aberdeen Art Fair 2026 with a diverse selection of my recent prints and mixed-media work, alongside selected editions from Printmaking Sans Frontiers.

My stand will bring together work from across my practice, including:

• Wildlife Rondels 2025–26 — print, mixed media and resin
• Portal series — mixed media and resin
• Ladders of Success — limited-edition prints and unique works on gold-leaf panels
• Smiley series — coloured perspex and light works
• On Cloud Nine — recent large-format linocut
• Ladders of Success #1 — recent large-format linocut

On Cloud Nine and Ladders of Success #1 come fresh from the Royal Scottish Academy exhibition Chaos and Control: Printmaking in Scotland Now.

Alongside my personal work will be a selected group of prints from Printmaking Sans Frontiers, representing more than 30 years of international collaborative printmaking and my work as a master printmaker and independent print publisher.

Expect a lively combination of linocut, etching, intaglio, silkscreen, lithography, mixed media, resin, gold leaf, perspex and light — traditional printmaking sitting alongside more experimental and object-based work.

The idea is to offer something for a wide range of visual tastes and collectors, from financially accessible original prints and limited editions to unique, one-off artworks.

EXTENDED EXHIBITION · LANGSTANE GALLERY

Coinciding with Aberdeen Art Fair, I’ll also be extending the exhibition into Langstane Gallery at WASPS Langstane Studios, Langstane Place, Aberdeen.

The gallery gives me the opportunity to show larger-scale work and pieces that cannot be accommodated on the Art Fair stand, while opening up more of the Hard Ground Printmakers and Printmaking Sans Frontiers archives.

Alongside my own current linocuts and mixed-media works will be selected archival and collaborative prints, including work by Hakim Anitola, Giacomo aka RUN, Billy Mandindi and Robert Siwangaza, together with other works drawn from more than three decades of printmaking and publishing.

The two venues complement one another:

Aberdeen Art Fair · Stand 13B — current personal work, original prints, mixed media and selected Printmaking Sans Frontiers editions.

Langstane Gallery — an extended presentation with larger works, archival prints and a broader view of the Hard Ground Printmakers collection.

Two Aberdeen venues. One weekend. More than 30 years of printmaking, mixed media, publishing and international collaboration.

Wildlife Portfolio by Jonathan Comerford

ELEPHANT BULL

One of the largest and most intelligent land mammals on Earth, the African elephant has long been a symbol of wisdom, memory and resilience.

This etching and drypoint print focuses on the quiet dignity of an old bull, standing directly before the viewer. The gold leaf background transforms the portrait into something beyond wildlife illustration—a celebration of an extraordinary animal and a reminder of our responsibility to protect it

Technique: Etching / Drypoint with Gold leaf.
Paper: 300gsm 100%cotton paper.
Size: H80 × W60 cm

Ladders of Success | 2026

I'm delighted to have presented Ladders of Success, a new large-scale linocut I created for the Chaos and Order exhibition.

The print reflects on the many directions a persons life can take. Rather than a single ladder leading upwards, the composition becomes an impossible structure of intersecting paths, questioning how we define achievement and who gets to climb.

The clouds, a recurring motif in my work, introduce uncertainty and possibility—balancing the ordered geometry of the ladders with the unpredictability that exists in both life and the printmaking process.

Linocut (Monochrome)
90 × 60 cm
Limited Edition of 10
Printed on 300gsm Cotton Rag

Prints are available for purchase.

Out of Granite City studio, Scotland.
I just dropped off two new and two historical linocuts of mine at Rosies Enterprise here in the Granite City.

Always good to work with a local framer—but even better when it’s a social enterprise doing real work in the community. Rosies supports people back into employment through skills training and hands-on experience, intergral to my creative printmaking philosophy and practise.

Looking forward to seeing these prints come together in their frames soon.
