“Discarded + Thread: An Act of Seeing” at Kintsugi Village
Industrial designer Elizabeth Salonen has spent years collecting the packaging most people discard without a second thought, discovering unexpected beauty in the sculptural contours of blister packs, cookie sleeves, and plastic clamshells. Her exhibition “Discarded + Thread: An Act of Seeing,” at Kintsugi Village, elevates these overlooked objects into works of art.
For Discarded, Salonen uses traditional mold-making techniques to transform disposable packaging into plaster reliefs and ceramic vessels. The exhibition also marks the debut of her architectural tiles, whose geometric impressions originate from everyday objects as humble as an AirPod case or light bulb packaging. Each handmade piece preserves traces of industrial production in enduring materials.
Thread, meanwhile, explores the meditative pleasures of repetitive handiwork through embroidered canvases adorned with delicate stitches.
