Urban Design School 🏆
Nour El-Koussy - Ruwayda Tarek - Farah Elfishawy،
From Studio to Reality

So proud of what the first cohort of Urban Design School has achieved 🏆
First place at Urban Unlocked 2026, the first course of Urban Design School, goes to The Grove | Maadi's Active Heart, by
Nour El-Koussy, Ruwayda Tarek and Farah Elfishawy.
Work worth pausing on.
Just four weeks ago, they stood before a site on the Nile Corniche in Maadi with a blank sheet and a lot of questions. What does this land need? Where will people come in from? And what is the city around it missing?
The answer was clear. Maadi keeps getting denser, while accessible public space keeps shrinking. So the team started with the park, not the buildings: a public park along the Corniche, open to everyone. From there, an active spine links the two entrances and meets at a strong node that became the heart of the place. Secondary spines branch out into zones with nodes of different scales and activities, while all vehicles stay on the edges so the inside remains calm and walkable.
Around the green heart, uses are arranged along three edges: hospitality, office and commercial. Buildings take up only about 22% of the site. The rest belongs to people.
The idea behind the name was one we worked on a lot. A grove isn't a forest. It's a group of trees planted with intent, at a human scale, where people naturally gather, sit and walk. That became the whole vision: nature as the project's identity, not just its landscape; public space as the thread connecting living, working, dining and leisure; and a place that brings the community back together. Or, as the team put it: stitching the city together through a shared active heart.
The credit for what made this project win is theirs: the effort, the late nights, the courage to throw away an option that wasn't convincing and start again, and keeping the human experience at the center while designing 20 feddans.
What Urban Unlocked 2026 gave them was the right sequence: read the site before drawing a line, idea before form, movement before massing, and alternatives and peer critique before submission. As their mentors and instructors, we were with them throughout, discussing the idea from the first sketch, challenging it, and following its growth session by session until it reached this point. The talent and effort were theirs. The course gave them the method. That's exactly what From Studio to Reality means.
This isn't the end. It's the first stop. The journey continues with this cohort and the ones to come, and there's so much more to learn and build together 💜
