A tour of where some plants in my house actually live, and why. It’s less about which plants like most and more about matching light and humidity to the rooms. Once you know your light, the rest gets easy.

This is one of the few plants that genuinely thrives in low light. Not “tolerates and survives” low light. Actually thrives.

Low light doesn’t mean no light. you still need a natural source of light somewhere in the room during the day. But it can be meters away from a window and still be completely fine.

It’ll also do well in bright indirect light if you have it. But it doesn’t need it.

If you’ve been avoiding plants because your space doesn’t get great light, this one’s for you.

All four plants want the same room. They done want the same amount of you.
Bright natural light is the one non-negotiable here.

Ruby Rubber Tree
The pink only stays pink in genuinely bright light. Otherwise it fades back to green. Water when the soil is dry and leave it alone the rest of the time. Pick this if you travel, forget things, and have one very sunny corner. Keep the milky sap away from curious pets.

Money Tree
That braided trunk stores water, which makes it the most forgiving plant on this list. Bright indirect light, water when the soil is dry most of the way down. Pick this if you want something big without thinking about it much. Safe around cats and dogs.

Areca Palm
The thirsty one. Wants soil that stays lightly damp and air that isn’t bone dry, and it will tell you with brown tips the second it’s unhappy. Pick this if you’re the type who checks on your plants. Also pet safe.

Bird of Paradise
Biggest presence, biggest appetite. Wants strong light, regular feeding, and those giant leaves wiped down so they can actually work. Pick this if you want a plant you look after, not one you just keep alive.
