Overview:
Beyout Alsharq Residential Complex Project started as a limited architectural competition, in which the first award and the project design contract were awarded to Prof. Dr. Abdelmohsen M. Farahat. This Residential Complex is located in Buryman, East of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is composed of 220 villas of different types, mosque, social club, playgrounds and other services. Main planning and design aims included reinterpretation of urban heritage values in abstract contemporary and practical forms, responding to socio-cultural needs of the family (privacy) and of the community (activities and services within pedestrian reach), efficient utilization of land, spaces and buildings, sustainability and high aesthetic quality.

Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge Competition 2025

Basic Design Concept:
The overall objective is symbolic expression of the achievement of the Kingdom, in general, and Damman in particular, in terms of "ecological balance", encompassing the natural environment and the urban environment. The circular spiral form emphasizes the continuous nature of ecology and the interrelatedness of all elements. The sculpture is the peak of the landscape, in one continuous dynamic form, that further expresses the nature of ecology.
The view of the sea should not be blocked by solid planes. Instead, the design offers a “framed view” of the sea, enriching both the design and the context. People can go through the sculpture, enjoy seeing it from different angles, and the sea. Terraced steps on both ends of the site give seats for people to view the sea, the sculpture and possible outdoor plays and shows. Abstraction not imitation of reality prevails.

House of the Future 2024-2025 Competition, Emirati House.

Concepts
The Key theme is Integration of the Heritage and socio-cultural aspects, on one hand; and contemporary science, technology and modern life-style aspirations of the Emirati family of today, on the other hand. Growth, flexibility and multiple choices through time are maximized to satisfy variable needs. Zero side set-back maximizes site utilization. Angular (45 degrees) arrangement allows maximum spaces, in the tight building lot, and maximum visual privacy between neighbors. It also allows optimum ventilation for all orientations, in the layout.
Building form is designed as a “double shell”. The external shell on facades and roof provides sun-protection, and favorable micro- climatic effects, that are further enhanced by landscape plants. Elements of the External shell represent contemporary abstract reinterpretation of traditional heritage, e.g. Screens & arcades.
Structural efficiency is integrated with optimum climatic treatment, flexibility and architectural aesthetics. The concrete Vault and cross vault, with tie beams can save around 80% of steel reinforcement, due to near elimination of bending moment. Hot air rising to the tip of the vault is discharged outside by pressure and suction fans, and replaced by fresh cooler air. This Continuous cross ventilation is especially important in the hot-humid climate of Emirates. Ventilation is further induced by the wind catcher above the stair deflecting favorable winds downward, and 3 solar chimneys pulling up and discharging hot air outside.
Sustainability is not limited to efficient climatic treatment. It is further enhanced by Landscape plants that are mostly food-producing. Water waste of basins and showers is treated by chlorination, and stored in a tank to be recycled for plant irrigation.
Interior flexibility allows open plan arrangement of living, dinning and Majlis spaces, or separating any of them temporarily by folded partitions, according to changing privacy needs. A small family living, breakfast table and kitchenette are provided in the first floor for convenience. Phasing growth is possible through various possibilities of future building of majlis and office in the ground floor, one or two bedrooms in the first floor, and a room, bath and kitchenette in the 2nd (roof) floor.

• The Design of Al – Dammam Tower, Dammam, S. Arabia was developed through layers of Integrating recreation, reinterpretation of cultural heritage, environmental awareness, energy efficiency, shopping, and economic development.
• Site analysis called for taking advantage of the site that has the potential of offering a focal point, a landmark, for the city.
• Architecture and Landscape Architecture were integrated at various scales. The central piece of the layout is the Dammam tower acting as the post of a tent, tensile structure housing an aviary (birds represent important cultural gesture), and an aquarium. Other elements of the layout include a planetarium, an open air theater including dolphin show, greenhouse, restaurant, cafeteria, shopping (abstraction of traditional Souq) and multi-storey parking with a roof garden.
• Various age categories can satisfy their interests in the many choices offered.
• Spatial experience is enriched by a variety of activities, space forms, vistas and visual texture.

إعادة تأهيل المبنى المجاور لمنزل على لبیب (سكن حسن فتحي) القلعة

أولا: التحدیات و الأهداف:
لا یكمن التحدي الأساسي لهذا المشروع في الارتقاء بمبنى مفرد قائم فقط، وإنما یكمن في تحقیق ذلك
من خلال أهداف أشمل هي التالیة:
1-1- أن یمثل هذا الارتقاء جزءا من منظومة أكبر، ثقافیا واجتماعيا واقتصاديا و ليس فقط تشكیلیا، أولها ما یتعلق بالمنطقة التاریخیة المحیطة.
1-2- أن يساهم الارتقاء بالمبنى في النهوض بالمحیط المباشر له ، كأنشطة و عمارة و عمران، خاصة مع التدهور الواضح القائم.
1-3- أن یتلاءم هذا الارتقاء بوجه خاص مع المبنى الأثري المجاور (منزل على لبیب) ،الذي حظي بسكن وعمل الرائد الكبیر حسن فتحي رحمه الله، والمخطط تحویله إلى متحف للتعریف به و بأعماله، على أن یشمل هذا التلاؤم أنشطة المبنى المزمع أن تكون بإذن الله ذات طابع ثقافي و یشمل كذلك التشكیل المعماري كطابع عام ومقیاس إنساني ومفردات معماریة، مع تجنب التقلید الحرفي.
1-4- معالجة مشاكل المبنى القائم، و أهمها المشاكل الإنشائیة، إذ لا توجد أساسات فقد تم البناء على التربة الردمیة مباشرة، ارتكازا على المید فقط ، هذا بالإضافة لرداءة التنفیذ القائم لدرجة عدم استواء أي سطح أفقیا أو رأسيا، حيث كان من المقرر استخدام المبنى كمخزن لتاجر دواجن.
1-5- محاولة تنفیذ كل ما تقدم من متطلبات خاصة مكلفة ضمن حدود معقولة، خاصة وأن المبنى لا ینتظر أن یعطى عائدا مؤثرا، مع الالتزام بعدم النزول عن المستوى المهني الواجب التمیز.
1-6- الالتزام بالاشتراطات البنائیة لهيئة الآثار التي تمنع زیادة الارتفاع عن مستوى منزل على لبیب المجاور) حتى لو كانت غرفة السلم) ، كما تمنع عمل البروزات كالمشربیات.
ثانیا: ممیزات الموقع:
2-1- القیمة التراثیة العالیة لمحیط المشروع حیث یوجد: مساجد السلطان حسن و الرفاعي و قاینباى الرماح المحمودیة وباب العزب وتكیة البسطامي ومنزل على لبیب وغیرھم.

2-2- القیمة الجمالیة الكبیرة للنهايات البصریة من وإلى المشروع ، و في خط السماء.
2-3- مشروع وزارة الثقافة الرامي لتحویل درب اللبانة إلى متحف سیاحي مفتوح.

ثالثا : مفاهيم و عناصر الحل التصمیمي:
3-1- إیجاد استمراریة وتناغم واضحین مع منزل على لبیب، بدون تكرار نسخة منه ، ویشمل ذلك التالي:
• التشكیل الحر المتناغم الممیز للعمارة العربیة خاصة في توزیع الفتحات (المحدودة نسبيا) ضمن المسطحات المصمتة، و بمفردات مشتركة أو متناظرة.
• استخدام نفس المواد والألوان والملمس البصري في الواجهات مثل السفل الحجري الواضح بالدور الأرضي مع استمرار خطوط منه لأعلى كإطارات للعقود بارتفاعات وتشكیلات مختلفة، وبیاض بیج بالدور العلوي
• استخدام نفس نسب العقد المدبب المملوكي.
3-2- الاهتمام بالمدخل كبؤرة التكوین المعماري (بارتفاع طابقین) ، مع معالجة میل الشارع بصعود عدة درجات موازیا للواجهة (طریقة المدخل المحني).
3-3- معالجة المشاكل الإنشائیة للمبنى و أهمها صب لبشة أساسات كاملة تحت میدات المبنى (القائم عشوائیا على التربة مباشرة)، مما تطلب صعوبة كبیرة، حیث تم صب اللبشة داخل كل بائكة على حدة في المنسوب المطلوب ، هذا بالإضافة إلى الحرص على عدم توسیع الفتحات لتجنب التشققات في الحوائط.
3-4- عمل المعالجات الفنیة التقنیة بكامل تفاصيلها ، التي تؤكد تكامل العمل المعماري ویشمل ذلك التالي:
أ- عمل مساحة كل دور بنظام المسقط المفتوح (باستثناء دورات المیاه) الذي یسھل تقسيمه بقواطیع عند الحاجة.
ب - عمل غرفة السلم على البسطة بین الدورین حتى لا یبرز سقفھا في واجهة المبنى.
ت - عمل رفرفة قلیلة على الواجهات الشمالیة لدفن وصلات التكییف داخلها.
ث - ستر وصلات السباكة تحت بسطة سلم الدخول.
ج - الحرص على التخلص من مخلفات البناء أول بأول وعدم تكویمها في الخارج لإعطاء القدوة
في النظافة).

ALI LABIB'S HOUSE (HASSAN FATHY'S RESIDENCE),

First: Challenges and Goals
The basic challenge for this project does not lie in the upgrading of a single existing
building, but in achieving this through more comprehensive goals, as follows:
1-1 That the upgrading represents part of a greater system culturally, socially, and economically not just form wise, primarily in relation to the surrounding historic area.
1-2 That the upgrading of the building would contribute to the upgrading and promotion of its immediate context, in terms of activities, architecture and urbanization, especially with the obvious existing deterioration.
1-3 That this upgrading would be in harmony, especially with the existing adjacent historic building (Ali Labib's house) which was privileged to be the residence and work place of the great pioneer Hassan Fathy, God bless his soul, which is planned to be turned into a museum, introducing Hassan Fathy and his works. This harmony includes the intended cultural acivities, the architectural form, general style, human scale and architectural vocabulary, while avoiding direct imitation
1-4 Treating problems of the existing building, most important of which the structural problems, since there are no foundations and the building stands directly on filled soil supported only on bottom beams, in addition to poor ex*****on, to the extent that no vertical or horizontal surface was even, since the building was planned to be a poultry storage.
1-5 Attempting to execute all the above mentioned special requirements within reasonable cost limits, especially that the building is not expected to give an effective return (profit), while keeping up the distinctive professional level required.
1-6 Abiding by building regulations of the Antiquities Department which prohibit any height exceeding the level of the adjacent Ali Labib's house (even if it is a stair well) and prohibits any projection like mashrabia's.

Second: Site Characteristics:
2-1 The great cultural heritage value of the surrounding Mosques, e.g. Sultan Hassan, Refaai, Kainbai Alramah, Mahmoudia, Bab ElAzab, AlBoustany Techia, Ali labib's house and others.
2-2 The great aesthetic value of the vistas from and towards the project, and the sky line.
2-3 The ministry of culture's project aiming of transforming Darb Ellabana to an open touristic museum.
Third: Concepts and Elements of the Design Solution
3-1 Establishing clear continuity and harmony with Ali Labib's house without repeating a copy of it. This includes the following:
• Free harmonious form distinguishing Arab Architecture, especially in the distribution of openings (relatively limited) within the solid areas with common or corresponding vocabulary.
• Using the same material, colors and visual texture in the facades, like the clear stone ( ground boarder) in the ground floor while extending some of it's lines upwards to frame the arches with different forms and heights, and beige paint on the upper floor.
• Using the same proportions of the pointed Mamluk Arch.
3-2 Giving attention to the entrance as the focal point of the architectural composition (two stories high), while treating the slope of the street, by few steps parallel to the façade (bent entrance).
3-3 Treating the structural problems of the building, mainly by casting complete raft foundations under the building bottom beams(existing directly haphazardly on the soil) which caused great difficulty while casting the raft foundation inside each bay individually at the required level. This is in addition to being careful not to enlarge the openings to avoid wall cracking.
3-4 Making technical treatments with all its details which confirms the integrity of the architectural work that includes the following:
A. Utilizing an open plan system for each storey (except for bathrooms) to facilitate division by partitions when needed.
B. Making the stair well room on the landing between the two stories so that its ceiling does not protrude from the building façade.
C. Making little cantilevers on the northern façade to bury the air conditioning connections inside it.
D. Covering the plumbing connections under the entrance stair landing.
E. Being keen to get rid of the construction wastes right away, and not to accumulate it outside (to set an example in cleanliness).
