The “Kiosk of the Unknown” is a temporary installation as part of the European Capital of Culture year in the Saxon city of Chemnitz. It is located in the middle of a former residential area named after Fritz Heckert. This was one of the largest prefabricated housing estates in the GDR and was once planned as a modern, green utopia on the site of a former airport. After German reunification, however, it lost its appeal: many residents moved away, buildings were demolished – and open spaces expanded. It is precisely here, next to the former airport building, that our four-week pop-up kiosk stands: a place of absent answers, where visitors are invited to look, try, inform themselves, consume, confront, and ask questions.

The kiosk occupies a small green residual space between a tram stop, prefabricated apartment blocks, and an ALDI supermarket, temporarily transforming it into a social meeting point within the neighbourhood. As a “fake travel center,” it offers blank postcards and district maps without annotations, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore the often prejudiced perception of the area themselves and to share their experiences with us and future visitors.

BIRD∙DOT UNICORN ∙ VILNIUS

Funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.

BIRD∙DOT – Lively Wall Art is an in-house project development dedicated to promoting nesting opportunities for common swifts in urban environments.

Every "dot" within the façade artwork is a functional nesting box for Common Swifts (lat: Apus Apus). Together, they form a vibrant living mural. In this way, BIRD∙DOT creates safe breeding spaces for swifts within a lively colony.

The idea for BIRD∙DOT emerged from the realization that modern construction methods and building renovations have led to the loss of many nesting sites for swifts. This has contributed to a significant decline in their population across Europe.

Through its joyful and visually engaging design, the project aims to evoke positive emotions and raise awareness for urban biodiversity.

The project’s first installation has now been realized as a pixel-style unicorn at the municipal creative hub in the Užupis district.

The funeral hall at the cemetery of Schwallungen was built as a replacement building at the transition between the lower and upper parts of the cemetery. Our aim was to create a pleasant and dignified place that does not impose itself, yet is still recognisable within the community as a special building. With its sandstone base and gabled roof, the timber building draws on regional architectural traditions.

To serve as an exemplary model for strengthening regional building culture, a simple and efficient construction principle was chosen: structural frames assembled from manageable solid timber profiles, erected using municipally owned equipment, and enclosed with protective timber cladding and wood-fibre insulation.

As a secular place, the new funeral hall expresses the mystique of death without relying on explicit religious symbols. The restrained ornamentation of perforated patterns together with the two semi-circular gable openings symbolises a higher power, as well as floating and passing beyond. The copper plates behind them create an additional mysterious shimmer within the interior space.

This is complemented by a clear spatial sequence of three zones: the open entrance area as the earthly realm, the viewing area as the spiritual realm, and the seating area in between as a transitional space.

Natural surfaces of wood and sandstone, with their warm and earthy tones, create an atmosphere of calm and comfort, allowing the building to achieve what we probably all wish for ourselves: to age with dignity.
