We see these same issues all the time here in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. You can prepare your trees for the next windstorm by checking for the following issues:
1. dead branches that can fall on cars, roofs, or people
2. cracks or breaks in the trunk as that is a sign of structural weakness
3. any new cracks or breaks
4. roots lifting out of the dirt as that is a tree's anchor
5. mushrooms as those are a sign of internal decay.

Aquí en Guanacaste, Costa Rica, vemos estos mismos problemas constantemente. Puede preparar sus árboles para la próxima tormenta de viento revisando si presentan lo siguiente:
1. ramas muertas que podrían caer sobre automóviles, techos o personas
2. grietas o roturas en el tronco, ya que son señal de debilidad estructural
3. cualquier grieta o rotura nueva
4. raíces que se levantan del suelo, pues estas sirven de anclaje para el árbol
5. hongos, ya que indican la presencia de descomposición interna.

Spikes might be the least understood piece of equipment in the arborist arsenal. Here in Costa Rica you often see tree workers using spikes to climb the tree with no rope or harness. Spikes are meant to stabilize the arborist during a removal when the tree will have more motion/kickback NOT to climb a tree that is going to be sticking around for three reasons: 1) spikes leave gashes in the trunk of the tree that can be infected with bacteria, fungus, or parasites that can cause the tree to be diseased and die early. 2) These are a stabilization method and do not reliably hold up the climber—without a harness and climbing system they are not safe. 3) The climber can only go up the trunk. If they are pruning their cuts will be too close to the trunk causing bad pruning, large cuts, gaping wounds, and the tree is less likely to recover. Save those tree spurs for removals, tree cowboy! 🤠 (Sorry, couldn’t help myself.) Las espigas podrían ser la pieza de equipo menos comprendida en el arsenal de los arboristas. Aquí en Costa Rica a menudo se ven trabajadores de árboles usando espigas para trepar al árbol sin cuerda ni arnés. Las espigas están destinadas a estabilizar al arborista durante una remoción cuando el árbol tendrá más movimiento/retroceso NO para trepar a un árbol que se va a quedar por tres razones: 1) las espigas dejan mescas en el tronco del árbol que pueden infectarse con bacterias, hongos o parásitos que pueden hacer que el árbol se enferme y muera temprano. 2) Estos son un método de estabilización y no sostienen de manera confiable al escalador, sin un arnés y un sistema de escalada no son seguros. 3) El escalador solo puede subir por el tronco. Si están podando, sus cortes estarán demasiado cerca del tronco, causando una mala poda, cortes grandes, heridas abiertas y es menos probable que el árbol se recupere. ¡Guarda esos espuelas de los árboles para la eliminación, vaquero de los árboles! 🤠 (Lo siento, no pude evitarlo.) 🇨🇷 ®

Want to prevent your trees from blowing over? Make sure that when your contractor is building they don’t cut the roots! Too often we meet people who want to keep their big, beautiful trees…right next to a pool deck, or over a house where the foundation needs to be poured. If the roots get cut the tree loses anchorage and becomes very susceptible to falling over in the rainy season.
