Geological Museum Project in Catania, Italy
Project Overview
Developed based on the Biancavilla Quarry designated as an Italian national-level geological heritage park in 2001 and officially approved for construction by local government in 2022, this key cultural tourism and museum infrastructure features a main building clinging to native exposed bedrock with an all-steel structural system and high-end point-supported glass curtain wall facade. In accordance with conceptual architectural drawings, original construction blueprints, EU construction codes and Italian local specifications, the Company completed detailed design for main steel structure and external point-supported glass curtain wall alongside material selection, overall thermal performance calculation and architectural rendering production. Full-cycle technical services ranging from conceptual refinement, construction drawing detailing and parameter calculation to post-completion acceptance guidance were provided, balancing geological heritage conservation, structural safety and venue operational functionality.
Key Challenges & Difficulties
First, extraordinary site constraints: erected within a protected natural geological heritage site and built against uneven bedrock, the steel structure and curtain wall design must adapt to complex topographic conditions without damaging primitive geological landscapes. Second, rigorous multi-layer technical standards: the design needs to satisfy geological heritage protection regulations, EU building codes and museum construction criteria, with mandatory performance testing covering wind load, water tightness, air permeability, seismic resistance and static load. Third, high structural matching difficulty: to counter potential steel frame deformation risks, tailored ultra-clear laminated insulating glass and special concealed aluminium mullions with three-dimensionally adjustable connecting joints are adopted via optimised sealant joint width design to reconcile structural stability and transparent facade aesthetics.
Project Outcomes & Benefits
Technical Benefits: Complete sets of steel structure construction drawings, detailed point-supported curtain wall blueprints, thermal calculation reports and architectural renderings were delivered, passing EU-standardised tests on wind tightness, water pe*******on, air permeability and seismic performance and gaining official approval from relevant Italian government authorities. Project Delivery: A distinctive museum integrating primitive geological landforms with modern steel-structure curtain wall architecture has been realised, filling the local gap in geological culture exhibition infrastructure and diversifying regional cultural tourism industries. Market Benefits: A pioneering integrated design solution of steel structure plus point-supported curtain wall for heritage-site buildings is formulated, complementing the Company’s portfolio of special landform museum projects and lifting its competitive edge in Southern Europe’s high-end public and cultural tourism construction sector while offering standardised technical references for future similar special-terrain overseas projects.
