TYPES OF FOUNDATION USED DURING OUR CONSTRUCTION PROCESSES
A strong building starts from a foundation designed for the actual conditions of the project—not simply the foundation that looks easiest or most common.
At ThinkBTP, foundation selection is based on factors such as soil conditions, structural loads, groundwater conditions, building size, site conditions, and economic considerations. This is why we don't use a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Here are some common foundation types and where they are typically used:
1. Strip Foundation
A strip foundation is a continuous strip of concrete that supports load-bearing walls. It is commonly used for relatively light structures where the soil has adequate bearing capacity at a reasonable depth.
2. Isolated/Pad Foundation
Pad foundations are individual foundations designed to support separate columns. They are widely used in framed buildings where columns transfer concentrated loads to the ground. Their size and depth depend on the column loads and the soil's bearing capacity.
3. Combined Foundation
A combined footing supports two or more columns on one foundation. It can be useful when columns are close together or when a property boundary prevents an individual footing from being positioned centrally under a column.
4. Raft/Mat Foundation
A raft foundation is a large reinforced-concrete slab that supports several or all of the columns and walls of a structure. It can be considered where individual footings would cover a large portion of the building area or where the soil has relatively low bearing capacity and load distribution needs to be improved.
5. Pile Foundation
Pile foundations transfer structural loads deeper into the ground when suitable bearing strata are not available near the surface, or when surface soils cannot safely support the required loads. Piles can also be appropriate for certain difficult ground and high-load conditions.
6. Pier/Deep Foundation Systems
Deep foundation systems can be used to transfer loads to deeper, stronger soil or rock layers. The appropriate system depends on the geotechnical investigation, structural requirements, construction method, and site conditions.
CAN TWO TYPES OF FOUNDATION BE USED IN ONE BUILDING?
Yes. In some projects, different foundation systems may be used within the same structure.
For example, variations in soil conditions, column loads, building geometry, existing structures, or site constraints can make one foundation solution unsuitable for every part of the building. A properly engineered design may therefore combine different foundation solutions where justified by structural and geotechnical analysis.
The important thing is not simply choosing a foundation it is choosing the right foundation for the right ground and the right structure.
At ThinkBTP, we don't focus only on how beautiful a building looks above the ground. We focus on what keeps it stable, durable, safe, and reliable from the ground up.
