Protection of Civilians Week begins today. Civilians, including aid workers, continue to face escalating risks in conflicts around the world. In recent years, arrests and detentions by state actors have surged, now surpassing kidnappings by non-state actors. The targeting of humanitarian personnel reflects increasing state interference and a growing need for accountability.

We are pleased to share that the Government of Canada will be supporting the continuation of our core data and analytics programme, including the Aid Worker Security Database (AWSD).

Since 2009, Humanitarian Outcomes has developed open-source, independent data resources on aid worker security and humanitarian presence worldwide. In addition to the AWSD, our Global Database of Humanitarian Organisations (GDHO) tracks humanitarian actors’ global presence, activities, and resources. Together, these open-access datasets provide a critical evidence base to inform policy and support humanitarian action. With Canada’s support, we will strengthen and expand these databases at a time when violence against aid workers continue to rise, and the sector faces mounting challenges to funding and data.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Government of Canada for helping keep these vital resources alive and accessible. By investing in data, we are collectively investing in a better-informed humanitarian community. Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada

We are truly grateful for the generous support from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), whose significant commitment enables us to continue our core humanitarian datasets at a critical juncture and after a period of funding uncertainty.

DFAT’s contribution ensures that the Aid Worker Security Database (AWSD) remains robust and publicly accessible, empowering humanitarian actors and other allies with timely data.

As violence against aid workers rises and reliable information becomes harder to secure, Australia’s leadership and investment make a tangible difference in global humanitarian response, saving lives and strengthening protection for those who serve in the most challenging environments.
