Experience Matters

The maintenance team was convinced the breaker had failed.

The equipment kept shutting down.

So the breaker was replaced.

A few days later...

The equipment shut down again.

This time, the troubleshooting changed.

Instead of replacing more parts, an experienced electrician started asking different questions.

• Has anything changed recently?
• Does it only happen under heavy load?
• Is there a loose connection creating heat?
• What happens just before it shuts down?

The answer wasn't inside the breaker.

It was a loose connection inside the distribution equipment that only became a problem when the electrical load increased.

The breaker was doing exactly what it was designed to do.

One of the biggest misconceptions about troubleshooting is that the first problem you find is the problem you're trying to solve.

It isn't.

Experienced electricians learn to ask another question:

What changed?

A recent repair.
A recurring complaint.
A piece of equipment that was replaced.
A pattern that wasn't there before.

Sometimes those answers solve the mystery faster than replacing parts ever could.

That's one of the biggest lessons we've learned after years of troubleshooting commercial and industrial electrical systems across Manitoba.

The tenant had one complaint.

"Every time I have a bath, I get shocked."

Maintenance had investigated.
Nothing obvious was wrong.

When our team arrived, we confirmed there was voltage in the water.

The answer wasn't found by replacing parts or opening walls.

It started with a simple question:

"What repairs have been done in this building recently?"

That question led us to an older maintenance request for a loose outlet. It was only a clue.

The real problem?

The building's main grounding conductor had been stolen.

Without proper grounding, a fault energized the bonded metal system serving multiple suites.

That's the difference experience makes.

Sometimes the solution isn't knowing what to replace.

It's knowing what to ask.
