Some projects have a funny way of growing… in the best way. 😂

Back in November, we first met with our return client to talk through what was originally going to be a kitchen renovation. Then the vision grew into a kitchen renovation with a sunroom… and eventually became a full main floor renovation, including the kitchen, sunroom, living room, and entryway.

This is one of the parts we love most about the design process — sometimes the best ideas come once we start looking at how the whole home connects and functions together.

The new main floor design is bringing in so much warmth and personality, with birch flooring, soft blue tones, custom blue built-ins, botanical wallpaper, layered window treatments, and a refreshed entryway with a pale yellow door and blue ceiling accents. It is going to feel bright, cozy, and completely unique to their home.

We’re so excited to see this one come to life. Stay tuned for the transformation! ✨

🔨 Meet Mike - Carpenter

Mike is a Carpenter at Valdek Construction and brings over 22 years of experience in the renovation and construction industry. With a strong background in hands-on building, he has developed a steady, practical approach to his work and takes pride in doing things properly.

Mike has been part of the Valdek team for over a year and a half, and in that time he has become a really valued part of our crew. He is warm, welcoming, and easy to be around.

One of the things Mike enjoys most about renovation work is that every day brings something different. He likes the variety that comes with the trade and the challenge of working through each stage of a project.

Mike is especially confident in framing, where skill, accuracy, and planning are key to creating a strong foundation for the rest of the work. His favourite type of project is a new basement development, where he can be part of transforming an unfinished space into something functional, comfortable, and well-built.

What Mike appreciates most about working at Valdek is the focus on constant growth and improvement — not only in the work itself, but also in personal life. He is a great example of some of our core values, especially teamwork, growth, and always trying to do better.

Outside of work, Mike loves dogs, and his go-to drink is green tea with honey. 🐕

👩‍🏫 At Valdek Construction, many of our larger renovation projects begin with a design phase — especially for full basement renovations, additions, kitchens, and whole-home renovations.

A design phase is one of the most important steps in a successful design-build project because it gives everyone a clear plan before construction begins. It helps us understand the layout, the scope, the details, the budget, and the overall direction of the project before anyone starts ordering materials or opening walls.

Design pricing can range anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the size and complexity of the project.

For example, a smaller kitchen renovation with a simple layout and minimal cabinetry will require less design time than a large custom kitchen with built-ins, a large island, detailed cabinetry, specialty storage, lighting plans, and more involved finish selections.

That is why the design range can vary so much. It is not one-size-fits-all — it depends on how much planning, drawing, coordination, and detail your project requires.

During the design phase, we work through the important pieces of the project so that the final construction quote is based on a clear, thoughtful, and build-ready plan.

At the end of the design phase, our clients receive:

• On-site design and layout meetings
• Site plan
• Floor plan layouts
• Construction drawings for permit application
• Detailed written scope of work
• Construction quote based on the completed design documents

The goal is to remove as much guesswork as possible before construction begins. A strong design phase helps create smoother planning, better budgeting, clearer expectations, and a more organized renovation from start to finish.

Whether you are planning a basement renovation, kitchen renovation, addition, or whole-home transformation, the design phase is where the vision starts becoming a real plan.

💅 Meet Kaylee Harder — Designer

Kaylee is the Designer at Valdek Construction and has been around renovation and construction for as long as she can remember. As her dad’s little helper growing up, she developed an early appreciation for how spaces come together and how much thought goes into creating something that truly works.

At Valdek, Kaylee has helped take our design process to the next level. She is a quick learner, a thoughtful problem-solver, and such a valuable part of our team. Her eye for detail and ability to understand a client’s vision has made a huge difference in how we plan, present, and bring projects to life.

Kaylee loves seeing a space transform from concept to completion. For her, great design is not just about how a room looks — it is about making sure it functions well, reflects the client’s style, and feels right for the way they live. She is especially confident with paint and colour selections, making her Valdek’s go-to paint expert.

Kaylee describes her approach as intentional design. She treats every project like it is her own and takes pride in helping clients feel clear, supported, and excited throughout the process. One of the most rewarding parts of her work is seeing a client happy with the final outcome.

Her favourite type of renovation is kitchens, where design, function, and personal style all come together. She also believes a great renovation team needs a mix of brains, brawn, and the ability to roll with unexpected surprises — which is exactly what makes her such a great fit at Valdek.

Outside of work, Kaylee enjoys spending time with her dogs, going to the lake, hiking, painting, crocheting, and pretty much anything crafty. Her go-to coffee order is a vanilla latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

We’re so lucky to have Kaylee on the Valdek team. 💙💛

🏠 This Headingley basement renovation had its final touches last week, and it has come such a long way.

We started with some structural issues that needed to be addressed, along with a few “before” conditions that needed some Valdek attention — but the end result is clean, bright, functional, and ready for this family to enjoy.

😊 Happy Tuesday!

The heart of Valdek. 💙💛

We’re feeling pretty lucky to have this team. Every person here brings something important to Valdek — skill, care, humour, problem-solving, patience, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Our work has always been about more than just renovations. It’s about communication, respect, growth, teamwork, and taking pride in the details. Those values only matter when you have the right people living them every day, and we’re grateful to say we really do.

A good team makes all the difference, and we’re proud of this one.
