Thinking of an energy upgrade to your home? Whole home deep energy retrofits, like the one we recently completed in South Osbourne, are an effective way to revitalize your home or building and make it as good or better than a new build.
On this project we were able to make an old leaky home warm and comfortable while also greatly reducing the amount of energy it takes to do so.
As Jon says in the video deep energy retrofits are very involved renovations, but when you take on the whole house as one we are able to deliver a much better product, both in terms of energy efficiency as well as quality and cohesiveness of the finishes.
If you are thinking about a renovation and you are curious about deep energy retrofits head over to our website and fill out the contact form, we would love to talk to you about the possibilities for you!

Meet Delayne!
Delayne is a carpenter and site lead here at Roost Custom Builders. He was inspired to get into carpentry 13 years ago when he was unsure what he wanted to do but knew that he wanted some of the practical skills his brother and father had. His favourite thing to do at Roost is finish carpentry and fine detail tasks. Outside of work Delayne gets hyped about dance and specifically swing dancing.
At roost we are proud of the team we have assembled and if you work with us you will get to see why!

Saw my neighbour use a push broom to clear snow off his car and questioned what I have been doing with my life.

Prepare prepare prepare! One thing that experienced trades people have over diy warriors is the understanding of how every step in the process impacts the next step and ultimately the final product. Making this floor flat now will make the flooring install much easier and faster and the final product will be substantially nicer and mire durable.

Foundation is wrapped at out River Heights back addition. With this section of the basement set to sit lower than the original foundation we had some underpinning details that we needed to execute before starting to build up. This ICF foundation wall is not only supporting our new 2 story addition but we also tied it into the grade beams of two previous additions that have experienced significant shifting since they were built. The tight sight conditions also made it necessary to do some blind side waterproofing as we were building.
Big thanks to for the Element ICF, for the footing bags, for the fastest deliveries in the west and the giraffe bracing rental, and for coming out and giving us some technical knowledge and emotional support.

2016 was a wild year for Roost Custom Builders. We were entering our 5th year as a business and were taking on bigger and bigger jobs. We rescued a home from a fly by night contractor, found endless amounts of scrap metal in a basement floor, massive underground plumbing trees and so much more.

Over the last ten years styles have changed, tools and building products have improved, and our team has grown and changed. But what hasn’t changed is our commitment to not just making spaces look stunning but to making them functional, comfortable, and sustainable.

We look forward to the next ten years. With lots of exciting new projects coming down the pipe we are work at increasing the positive impact we have on our world through our commitments to performing quality work, being a safe and supportive work place, and combating climate change through our work on Winnipeg’s existing housing stock.

Stay tuned for more…

We don’t do a lot of board forming but when we do we have found that vegetable oil makes a great form release oil!

When you use plywood or wood boards for forming if you don’t apply some kind of bond break to the wood it will come apart in splinters when you try to remove it. Traditionally the bond break is a petroleum based form release oil which is applied with a sprayer. This oil has a strong smell that soaks into your clothes and body and gets everywhere.
It is still the best option for companies doing a lot of traditional concrete forming but at Roost Custom Builders we mostly use ICF for our grade beams and foundations and so storing barrels and sprayers of form release oil for the occasional board form detail is a logistical headache.
Instead we have learned that just standard vegetable oil applied with a paint roller is cheaper, smells better, and all around easier for our small projects. Hope that helps!

Trying out a new toy! We just picked up this rebar bender/cutter and it works surprisingly well! Bonus tip i set the cutting jaws my 18” from a stake which made my repetitive cuts fast and easy. Any time you can avoid using your tape measure makes for fast work!

Those of you who don’t live in cold climates might not realize that when clay and dirt freezes it becomes as hard as rock, and the colder it gets the harder it gets. It gets so hard that mini-excavators and skid-steers stand no chance of breaking through and even large excavators sometime need a giant pointed tooth called a frost ripper to break up the earth before digging.
When the earth becomes this hard us lowely carpenters stand little chance of driving our wooden stakes we use for footings, sleepers, and braces and in fact once the frost gets down a few inches the wood will splinter apart before it breaks through. Using an 1&1/2” hammer drill bit to pre-drill the frozen part of the clay for our wood stakes (or a smaller bit for metal stakes) makes this work possible.

On this River heights kitchen renovation we had to patch in a bit of wainscotting that was disturbed during our restructuring. While we were looking at matching existing stock we noticed that a previous renovation had replaced some of the original cornices with a modern mdf trim that was a poor match to the original. We decided to use our router table to modify an off the shelf product to more closely match the original product, and while not a perfect match, we are able to get a lot closer to the original detail. This will be a minor improvement in the grand scale of this remodel but it is nailing these little details from start to finish that makes all the difference in the finished product.
