With this heat wave, there are a few things you can do to help the house stay cool.
1. If you have ceiling fans, run them counter-clockwise to distribute the air.
2. Keep all window coverings closed during the day.
3. Don't open your windows at night, even if it cools down: this lets in all the humid air that your A/C has been working all day to get rid of.
4. Your A/C can only cool your house to approximately 20F (11C) difference in temperature from outside. If it's 90F (32C) outside, your A/C won't normally be able to cool lower that about 70F (21C) at best. Turning the temperature lower will just use more electricity and may cause the unit to freeze up.
5. Make sure that your furnace filters are NOT the pleated ones. Cold, dense air can't get through these easily.
