Heavy timber stair systems tend to outperform lighter residential-style construction in harsh coastal environments for a reason.

Salt exposure, constant moisture, UV, sand abrasion, and heavy public use are extremely demanding on exterior infrastructure. Larger timber members, solid stringers, and robust connection detailing typically provide better long-term durability and more predictable aging than lighter cut-out residential-style systems.

Custom fabricated brackets and exposed hardware systems can also simplify maintenance and hold up better in aggressive marine conditions.

And let’s be honest, heavy timber simply suits these environments. Substantial materials feel appropriate in coastal landscapes where durability matters.

Coastalworks focuses on durable site-specific structures and infrastructure for coastal public-space environments.

Film forming finishes look great right up until they don’t.

We advise against them wherever possible. Failure is often abrupt, and the fix is rarely simple. What should be maintenance becomes a full reset.

Predictable aging is almost always the better long term strategy.

Remote coastal sites. Limited access. Tight budgets. And rock that has to go.

Conventional methods often aren't an option — no road for a drill rig, no permits for blasting, no room for heavy equipment.

Betonamit is a non-explosive expansive demolition grout that solves exactly this problem. Drill small holes, mix and pour the slurry, and let it work. Within 12–24 hours the rock fractures from within — no noise, no flyrock, no drama. Then break it apart and clear the site.

Coastal sites demand creative problem solving. Knowing what tools exist and when to use them is half the battle.

If you've got a site access challenge or a project that doesn't fit the conventional playbook, let's talk.

New concrete retaining wall with a horizontal cedar fence above for a client’s front yard.

This space was previously taken over by a massive Portuguese laurel that had pushed into the driveway and crushed the sewer line with its roots. After removing the hedge and repairing the line, we built the wall and fence to create a clean, durable separation between yard and driveway.

With spring around the corner, now’s a good time to start thinking about those small projects that make summer more enjoyable—front steps, railings, porches, garden structures, or fixing the thing you’ve been stepping around all winter.

If you’ve got something in mind and want to get it sorted before summer, feel free to reach out. I’m local and run Coastalworks—happy to chat through ideas or take a look.

Did you know that the same naturally occurring chemicals in cedar that make it so durable will also react with the iron in many fasteners? The reaction often results in unattractive stains. This is why it’s important to select the correct fasteners for your project.
