Rebates are back!

Starting October 15, FortisBC is bringing back its rebate for dual fuel heating systems. That's a high-efficiency gas furnace paired with a heat pump.

🔸 Up to $4,000 for homeowners
🔸 Up to $8,000 for income-qualified households
🔸 For homes replacing a gas furnace that's at least 15 years old

The work has to be done by a contractor in the Home Performance Contractor Network. We're one of them.

If your furnace is getting up there in years and you've been waiting for rebates to come back, now's the time to get a number. Estimates on system replacements are free.

Conditions apply. FortisBC sets the eligibility rules and you apply for the rebate yourself. We'll walk you through what's needed.

It's a lot easier to sort something out in October than on a -15° night in January.

Full house this weekend? Oven on, doors opening and closing, extra bodies in every room. It's the kind of weekend you really don't want the furnace to pick for a breakdown.

The homeowner checks from our last post cover the basics. A proper tune-up covers what you can't see:

🔸 A safety check first, including how the furnace is venting
🔸 Burners and ignition checked and cleaned so it lights reliably
🔸 The heat exchanger inspected for cracks or wear
🔸 Airflow and the blower checked so heat actually reaches every room
🔸 Thermostat confirmed to be reading and responding properly
🔸 A straight answer on how your system's doing and whether anything needs attention

It's an hour or so now, versus a no-heat call in January.

Before you call anyone, there are a few things worth doing yourself. Most take five minutes.

🔸 Swap the filter. It's the cheapest thing you'll do for your furnace all year and with the summer we had, you really need to do this.
🔸 Run the heat early. Turn it on for a bit on a cool evening. Better to find a problem now than on the first freezing night.
🔸 Clear the space around the furnace. Storage boxes, laundry, and paint cans have a way of creeping up on it over summer.
🔸 Check your vents and returns. Furniture and rugs end up covering them more often than you'd think.
🔸 Test your carbon monoxide detector. New batteries while you're at it.
🔸 Look at the outside vents. Newer furnaces vent through pipes on the side of the house. Leaves, nests, and later snow can block them.

A little dusty smell the first time it runs is normal and should clear quickly. If it doesn't, or anything smells like it's burning, shut it off and give us a call.

Your furnace has been sitting quiet since spring. In a few weeks, it's going to run almost non-stop until April.
