It is easy to fill a bed with perennials and make it look good from spring through summer. It is just as easy to forget what that same bed looks like in January. Plant for both.

You paid for landscaping and the plants are still dying. Landscaping mistakes cost twice: once at planting, again when the beds get dug out. Darrell walked a large landscaped property on Vancouver's West Side where the plants were already telling on the design. The problem was rarely the plant. It was where it went and what was left on the soil around it. The garden was designed to look nice. It was not designed to work with the space, the sun and shade, or what is growing above it.

Two plants that hold a bed together through winter. Hellebores in the front border, green all winter and flowering in it. Sarcococca, green all year and flowering late winter.
