The section: architecture's x-ray.

Plans show layout, facades show faces, but only the section reveals how a building truly works. It cuts through floors to expose structure, circulation, light, and the relationship between spaces, inside and out.

Master the section, and you master the building.

CopenHill, Copenhagen, Denmark | BIG

A power plant you can ski down. BIG's waste-to-energy plant burns the city's waste for clean energy and gives its roof back to the public: ski slopes, hiking trails and one of the world's tallest climbing walls.

Rachofsky House, Dallas, USA | Richard Meier

White planes, glass volumes and sculpted light. Meier's 1996 Dallas residence reads as a private gallery, every facade a study in transparency and geometry.

Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, USA | Frank Gehry

Completed in 2003, the Walt Disney Concert Hall is Frank Gehry's stainless steel symphony in downtown Los Angeles, home of the LA Philharmonic.

Sails of curved metal wrap the building like frozen music. Inside, warm Douglas fir wood softens the geometry, and the vineyard-style auditorium wraps the audience around the orchestra.

Gehry drew the first sketches on a napkin. The building took sixteen years to become real.

Never Never Cube, Mohali, India | Studio Ardete

A commercial building in Sector 82 wrapped in a folded, origami-like concrete skin. Deep triangular balconies planted with greenery carve into the dark sculptural facade, shading the interiors from the harsh sun.

Urumqi Cultural Center Grand Theater, Urumqi, China.

A snow lotus blooming in the desert city.

Opened in 2021, the Grand Theater is the largest petal of Urumqi's Cultural Center, a complex of six halls gathered around one tower in Shuimogou District. Its white dome unfolds like the Tianshan snow lotus, a flower native to Xinjiang.

The theater covers about 48,700 square meters and rises 37.3 meters. Inside, the 1,675-seat main hall hosts opera, dance and drama, making it one of the largest and most complete theaters in northwest China.

By day it is a white flower against the mountains. By night it glows from within.

Chamber Church, Qingdao, China | Büro Ziyu Zhuang.

A church drawn in white lines.

Completed in 2022, the Chamber Church stands in the Aduo Town resort at the foot of the Zangma Mountains. Sixty spaced-out aluminium fins form its walls, roof and bell tower, turning the classic church silhouette into something abstract and weightless.

The design borrows from traditional church architecture, the spire, the basilica plan, the repeating arches, then rebuilds them as pure vertical rhythm. Gaps between the fins let daylight filter through the interior like a soft glow.

A modern icon that still reads, unmistakably, as a church.

Turning Torso, Malmö, Sweden | Santiago Calatrava.

A skyscraper that twists like a human torso.

Completed in 2005, Santiago Calatrava's tower rises 190 metres over Malmö's Western Harbour. Nine five-storey pentagons stack around a concrete core, turning a full 90 degrees from ground to top.

The form comes from Calatrava's own white marble sculpture, Twisting Torso, which abstracts a human figure in motion. It was Scandinavia's tallest building until 2022 and won the 2005 Gold Emporis Skyscraper Award.
