✨ Introducing our newest Pamana Award recipient: Irene Ugboajah ✨

At Foliage Filipino, the Pamana Award is more than recognition, it is an investment in people who are building stronger, more connected communities through creativity, leadership, and authentic storytelling.

Based in Kamloops, BC, Irene Ugboajah embodies that spirit through her work as a creative storyteller, content creator, and community-minded communicator. A student at Thompson Rivers University, Irene has cultivated a voice rooted in confidence, self-expression, and genuine connection, using beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and digital storytelling as tools to uplift and inspire others.

Through both her creative pursuits and community involvement, Irene continues to create spaces where people feel seen, empowered, and encouraged to grow. Her positive energy, authenticity, and dedication to meaningful connection reflect the heart of what the Pamana Award stands for.

By recognizing emerging leaders and changemakers like Irene, we continue investing in a future shaped by community, creativity, and collective impact.

Congratulations, Irene!

Swipe 👉🏽 for the TLDR; like a dream ☁️

I was born in the Philippines and grew up in a household where my parents worked manual labour jobs, navigating a country in a language they didn’t fully speak.

At home, I understood Tagalog… but I didn’t speak it. For a long time, I carried a quiet shame around my culture. It wasn’t until my early twenties that I started to reclaim that part of myself. 🇵🇭

A lot of my life has been about figuring things out on my own. Navigating school, self-funding my education, and learning how to turn creativity and resilience into something meaningful.

Today, that journey shows up in everything I do, from my work in communications to building communities like Foliage Filipino, and mentoring others finding their own path.

So this moment means a lot - really it’s kind of surreal 🫶..

I’ve been selected as a Top 75 finalist for the Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards 2026 🇨🇦

This is a People’s Choice Award, which means your support can help me get to the Top 25. Voting is open until June 12.

Speaking of community and doing the work to help it thrive, this is what I mean…

🌿Introducing the Pamana Award 🌿

Pamana means heritage — what we inherit, carry, and pass on. In some way, our legacy.

The Pamana Award is a 5-year collaboration between and the International Association of Business Communicators, British Columbia to support undergraduate communicators and storytellers in BC who honour heritage, culture and community throughout their daily lives.

The Pamana Award includes: $1000 cash towards tuition, mentorship, membership with .bc , and public recognition on our channels.

I really wanted to do something to give back, and I remember that some of the hardest times in my life were during my undergrad - cash was tight, the future uncertain, and my community was fluid, evershifting.  With this award, I hope to alleviate some of that with tuition support, guidance, and opening the door to a supportive community to turn to - like I have with IABC/BC. To raise my community, I thought perhaps, this is one way - the first way of many I honour legacy. My way of making an impact.

For those who are IABC/BC followers, the face of Foliage Filipino may look familiar because Maycko Macapugas was the 2024/2025 chapter president. His dedication to his craft and community is exactly what this award is about.

Applications open Friday, Jan 30, 2026 Visit to learn more or check out the link in our bios to read more about the award.

So… where have I been since 2024? Still foliagefilipinoing myself space to grow 🌱

I took on a corporate communications job (plot twist!!), somehow found myself speaking at conferences around the world (plot twist x2), and earned a professional certification that made me realize where my true passions really lie: communications and storytelling. 📖

🏞️Somewhere along the way, I started shifting—from content creator to communicator, strategist, consultant. From making things look nice to helping things make sense.

And yes—plants are still my first love. But now they’re personal. One story in a whole canopy of human stories I get to help tell.

Everything I’ve learned about culture, care, systems, and growth now shows up in how I support businesses with their communications—especially when things are messy, changing, or undefined.

Foliage Filipino is not your average boutique. It’s rooted value systems - pun intended - and where I get to do work that captures all of me. 💚

Foliage Filipino is the space where culture and communications grow together. 🌿
