Your home may have been properly insulated when it was built. That doesn’t mean it meets today’s standard.

Building codes change over time as we learn more about building science, energy efficiency and how homes perform in our climate.

That’s why an attic that was considered well insulated 15 or 20 years ago can be noticeably below what we’d aim for today. As Josh explains, older homes may have been built around R-40, while R-60 is now a common target for attic upgrades.

Nothing necessarily “went wrong” with the house — the standard moved.
