Built in Canada. Built for Canada. 🇨🇦

Sol Spaces is a Canadian company, and wherever practical, we make a conscious effort to source Canadian products, materials and suppliers for our greenhouses.

There are good reasons for that.

Buying Canadian helps support local businesses, skilled trades and jobs. It shortens supply chains. It also allows us to work with materials and suppliers that understand the conditions our greenhouses must withstand, from intense summer heat to an Alberta winter.

We can’t source every component in Canada, and we won’t pretend otherwise. But when a good Canadian option is available, we want Canadian businesses to get that opportunity.

There’s also a natural connection to what Sol Spaces is all about.

We build greenhouses so people and communities can grow more of their own food, closer to home. Whenever possible, we think the greenhouse itself should follow the same philosophy.

Grow local. Build local. Support local.

A garden grows more than food. 🌱

That's one of the messages coming from the University of Alberta, where gardens are becoming places to learn about food, sustainability and our relationship with the natural world.

And that idea is wonderfully simple.

For generations, knowing how to grow food was ordinary knowledge. Today, many of us can go our entire lives without knowing how a carrot gets from a seed to our dinner plate.

Community and teaching gardens are helping change that.

They give people an opportunity to put their hands in the soil, understand where food comes from, learn from one another, and experience the satisfaction of eating something they helped grow.

Some U of A garden initiatives go even further, contributing locally grown produce to food-security programs on campus.

At Sol Spaces, we believe this matters.

Food security isn't only about producing more food. It's also about rebuilding the knowledge, confidence and capacity to grow it ourselves.

Because when someone learns how to grow food, the harvest can last far beyond a single season.

🌱 A garden grows food. It also grows knowledge.

The more we learn about pollinators, the more remarkable they become. 🐝

New research published in Science has shown that bumblebees are capable of something once thought largely reserved for animals with much larger brains: solving a completely new problem.

Researchers presented bees with an artificial flower containing a food reward that was out of reach. The solution? Move a small ball into position, climb onto it, and use it as a platform to reach the flower.

The bees weren't specifically taught to do that.

They figured it out.

Even when researchers changed the experiment so the flower was hidden from view, many bees still moved the ball to the correct location, evidence that their behaviour was goal-directed rather than simply instinctive.

Why does this matter?

Because pollinators aren't simply background players in our environment. They're extraordinarily complex creatures and an essential part of the ecosystems that produce our food.

As we think about food security, climate resilience and growing more food closer to home, we also need to think about creating spaces where pollinators can thrive.

A greenhouse can help extend a growing season.

But a resilient food system extends well beyond the greenhouse walls.

Sometimes the smallest creatures are doing some of the most important work.

Extreme weather isn’t coming. It’s already here.

Longer heat waves and more unpredictable weather are changing how we grow food. That’s why every detail matters.

This Sol Spaces greenhouse is equipped with two solar-powered exhaust vents that automatically help remove excess heat whenever the sun is shining the strongest—without electricity, wiring, or ongoing operating costs.

It’s a simple idea:
☀️ More sun = more ventilation = healthier growing conditions.

But this greenhouse represents something even bigger.

Every family that builds the capacity to grow fresh food is taking one more step toward greater food security, resilience, and self-reliance. In a changing world, producing even a portion of your own food is becoming less of a hobby and more of an investment in the future.

Growing food isn’t just about gardening anymore.

It’s about taking control of your food source.
