This is our operator, Darren Diaz-Mulligan, scaling a massive Silver Maple in the cold.

Crown raising (trimming the lower branches of a tree) is sometimes necessary, like in this case at a park, to improve safety and accessibility for everyone—kids like me, who don’t want to bump our heads on the lower branches while running around 🤪

For common spruce trees, those lower branches play an essential role. They help retain soil moisture, support root growth, and provide a habitat for mosses and other shade-adapted plants. If the space below isn’t actively used or causing an obstruction, it’s best to let the tree grow naturally. 🌿

Fun fact:
The oldest spruce tree in the world is a clonal Norway spruce in Sweden, over 9,500 years old! This tree is unique because when the main trunk dies, new trunks grow from the same roots, allowing it to live for thousands of years 🙏
