MONDAY MYTH-BUSTER: “Bites in the bed? It must be bed bugs.”
Not necessarily. Itchy marks can come from many things, including other insects and skin sensitivities, so bites alone can’t tell us what’s in a home. I’m not a medical professional, so if you’re worried about your skin, check with your doctor. What I can do is inspect your home and use monitors to find out whether there are bed bugs, or something else.

FRIDAY FACT: On Monday we busted the myth that mouse control is a one-visit job. Here’s what the rest of the job looks like.

This customer’s backyard shed had an active mouse problem. Step one was cleaning up and trapping. But that’s only half of it. The other half is closing every way in, or the next mice just move back in.

Last week I told you I’d update you on the rat. Here’s the update: I didn’t need to trap it, because I found how it was getting in.
Under the kitchen cabinets of this main-floor unit was a hole, plus cracks where the floor meets the wall. I covered the hole with a 2x4, then spackled every small gap between the board and the floor. It was tight, awkward work under the cabinets, but it’s what keeps them out.
The rats are gone, and they can’t get back into this kitchen. Traps deal with the rat you have. Sealing the entry point deals with the next one.

MONDAY MYTH-BUSTER: Mouse Edition

Myth: "Mouse control is a one-visit job. Set a few traps and you're done."

I'm hearing this story more and more: someone has a mouse problem, traps go down, there's little follow-up, and the mice keep coming back. A few customers have called me after exactly that.

Here's why a single visit rarely does it. Mice breed fast and they're good at hiding, so the one you catch is often not the only one. A trap on its own doesn't tell you how many are there, where they're travelling, or how they got in.

My approach is slower, and some would say obsessive. I clean up what mice have left behind, set traps where the activity actually is, monitor with cameras, and come back to check. I look for every way in, inside and out, and close it up. That's what stops it from happening again.

It's also the right time of year. Before the outdoor furniture and gardening gear get put away for winter, check the shed or garage or your basement. If mice are in there now, they'll be settled in by spring.

Friday Fact: rats don’t need a door. They make one.

Their front teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw constantly: wood, drywall, the back of a kitchen cabinet. That’s how a small gap becomes a hole.

MONDAY MYTH-BUSTER: Rat Edition

Myth: "Rats are a downtown problem. We don't get them in the suburbs."

I've had a run of rat calls over the last few days, and two of them couldn't be more different: a suburban home where rats had been through the garage, and a main-floor unit in a very urban multi-unit building, where they're active in the kitchen. Different neighbourhoods, same problem.

Rats go where there's food, warmth and shelter, and that describes homes right across the GTA. As the weather turns cold, rats start looking for somewhere to spend the winter: garages, basements, kitchens, the gaps behind cabinets.

Here's the part people miss: a rat that's left isn't a rat that's gone. In the garage, the rats have moved on for now. But unless the holes and entry points are found and sealed, they'll be back. An adult rat can fit through a gap about the size of a quarter, and they'll gnaw to make it bigger.

That's why I don't just set a trap and leave. I find how they're getting in, clean up what they've left behind, track the activity, and come back, usually more than once, until it's actually resolved.

Friday Fact: “I saw a mouse” is almost never about just one mouse.

Catching a mouse is genuinely hard. But that’s not even the real job. If you’ve seen one, there’s usually more you haven’t.

MONDAY MYTH-BUSTER: Mouse Edition

Myth: "If I catch the mouse, the problem's solved."

It feels like the finish line. A trap goes down, a mouse is caught, the house goes quiet. But catching a mouse only answers one question: "Is there a mouse?" It doesn't answer the one that matters: "How did it get in?"

Here's why that matters. A single female mouse can have up to 10 litters a year, and mice can squeeze through a gap about as wide as a pencil, roughly ¼ inch. So one caught mouse often means others are already inside, and if the way in is still open, more will keep coming.

That's why our approach doesn't stop at traps. We monitor activity with cameras and tracking tools, and we check the whole property, inside and out, to find the paths mice are using. Then we close them, so it doesn't happen again.

Friday Fact: they're not "hanging around." They're peaking

Here's something most people don't know: a wasp colony reaches its largest size and its most defensive state in late summer and early fall — not spring or midsummer. As long as there's no hard frost, the colony hasn't died off, workers are still foraging aggressively for sugar, and nests keep growing. That's exactly what's happening in Toronto right now, with no frost yet and a warm week ahead.

This season alone, we've found hives built into tree trunks, nests packed into shed rafters and pergola beams, and colonies working their way into eaves and rooflines — sometimes more than one on a single property. Whether it's a dive-bomb near your table or just an uncomfortable hover you can't ignore, an active nest nearby doesn't get better on its own this time of year. It gets bigger.

Tonight begins Sukkot, and for the next seven days many of you will be eating and gathering outdoors in the sukkah — exactly the kind of open-air space an active colony can turn stressful fast. If wasps, hornets, or anything flying is making that harder than it should be, don't wait it out. Call us.

Friday Fact: same method, different buildings.

This week we talked about how mouse activity gets misread — droppings that look old, quiet rooms that seem inactive. What we didn't mention is that it doesn't matter where that activity is happening. Basement, kitchen, shed — the approach is the same, because the behaviour is the same.

This particular job was a shed, not a house, but the process didn't change one bit: cameras and traps set up together, tracking exactly what's moving through the space before deciding on next steps. No guessing based on a dropping here or a chewed bag there — actual confirmed activity, on video, in real time.

That's the point of an integrated approach. It's not a basement plan or a kitchen plan or a shed plan. It's a method that adapts to wherever the problem actually is, because mice don't care what kind of structure they're in — they care about food, shelter, and going unnoticed.
