Dahlias are fall show-stoppers, adding vibrant warm late-summer and autumn color to any garden. They can be as tall as 4-5 ft and have flowers the size of dinner plates or be as small as 2' and have compact blooms. They also make excellent cut flowers and help extend the life of your garden in fall, blooming long into September and sometimes even October. The time for planting dahlias is spring, so now is the time to get in touch if you would like to add some fall color to your garden.

In this garden renovation, we incorporated a variety of sun and shade plants to add more seasonal interest and fill in some areas beneath the Japanese maples where not much was growing. Here, the first two photos are the before photos and the rest were taken right after the garden was installed and at a separate visit later in the season.

After meeting a lot of clients who ask about building patios and decks, I finally had the privilege this year of demolishing part of a patio, so we could put in a small border garden. The previous owner of this home had bricked over the backyard, we cut away the stone and added some edging. We planted a garden including a maple and one dwarf metasequoia with a variety of perennials. I was so happy to have a client willing to do this. I am actually meeting more and more people who want to get rid of their lawns and replace them with something more interesting, or remove a patio which serves little purpose besides taking up precious green space. We live in a country obsessed with the idea of "the cottage," without realizing that "the cottage" could come closer to us if we only made a bit of effort to surround our homes with more greenery.

As the weather warms up, many of you may be considering landscaping projects for your gardens. A common question I receive is, "How much will it cost?". It’s crucial to approach this topic without awkwardness. Think of it like going to a hair salon: the services and their costs can vary significantly from a blow dry to a balayage, there is a huge range in cost. When discussing your dream garden, remember that for plants and maintenance only, our gardens range between $4,000-$25,000. If you want hardscaping such as patios, pergolas, special furniture, water features, etc. you can easily find yourself in the 100-500,000$ range. We find that plants (softscaping) brings a good bang for your buck. But it's vital to understand that a significant portion of this budget may go towards preparing your space, including removing invasive plants and unwanted weeds. If you're looking to tackle your garden in stages, that’s perfectly fine! Just ensure you have a clear budget in mind so that we can create the best plan for your yard with the funds available at the moment.

The process of designing seasonal urns requires more work than one might imagine. It begins with getting to know the tastes of each client in terms of style and color preferences, then to the procurement of plants, the transporation of plants to the site and the fun part, which is putting the plants into containers to create a variety of textures, heights, leaf shapes and blooms. After everything is in the pot, then there is the watering and the clean up of the containers and wrappings. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of waste involved with all of this plastic. But we do return nursery trays to our growers. When possible, we also try to incorporate perennials such as rhododendrons as the centerpiece so that those plants can be rehomed into the gardens of clients and summer bulbs can also be rehomed after they are spent to bloom again next spring.

Our Clinton Street Shade Garden shows how shade-loving plants can create a peaceful urban retreat. Pink hydrangeas, feathery ferns, and textured foliage layer beautifully for a vibrant and thoughtful year-round design. We take care of it every two weeks, so we get to see it evolve, week to week, year to year. A small drip irrigation system cuts down on water usage and keeps the garden well fed during summer droughts.

Transform your small urban space with an Asian-inspired garden—rocks forming mountain illusions, polished river stones, and slow-growing shrubs to evoke larger trees. Having lived in China for over 16 years, I had the chance to visit countless Chinese gardens, as well as gardens in Japan, Thailand and Malaysia. These types of gardens can work exceptionally well in the Canadian context as they are not reliant on flowering plants and incorporate many evergreens which make them perfect for a 4-season, low-maintenance garden.

Pink and white hydrangeas, cascading ivy, white tulips, pink ranunculus and dusty miller combine to create a spring look which is both subtle and bold enough to be seen from the road. The great thing is that the ivy can be used all season and only grows more and more lush throughout summer and fall.

Despite all appearances, spring is almost here, and that means that Witchhazel or Hamamelis, pronounced ham-ah-MAY-lis, is here. Though it may not be as showy as forsythia, witchhazel beats forsythia to the race when it comes to timing. I've even seen some varieties bloom in February. Unlike Forsythia, witchhazel does not have such a wild growth habit and does not tend to shoot sprouts high into the sky or sprawl all over the lawn. These guys also have some excellent fall color. Smaller varieties are available for small yards, and there is also a native Hamamelis virginiana, which can tolerate full shade. Fun fact: this shrub can propel its seeds up to 10 m away! These seeds are eaten by grouse, wild turkeys and pheasants, while the leaves support over 60 moths and butterflies in their larval stages. For those of you with shady back yards, this may be the shrub to plant. I've even seen it survive under a canopy of conifers.
