A very rare Percival Lafer, ( Brazilian chair designer ) chair and ottoman circa 1960’s. Brought in with barely a pulse. After two weeks of intensive leather treatment the leather has come to a healthier state. Bringing vibrancy back to the dried out leather. Another successful vintage Roots jacket restoration! After 30 years of putting up a good fight, the jacket has given up. Having been a part of so many milestones. Dad brought in the well loved jacket and wanted to restore it to its former glory. He wanted to gift it to his now grown son, who saw dad wearing it his whole life. We completely deconstructed it back to its shell and removed all lining, knit trim and replaced with insulated quilted lining with leather trimmed inside pocket. We treated the leather for 4 weeks and brought back some fading and softened the leather in the process. A labor of love! A father’s jacket resurrected! Dad wore the jacket in 1974 and literally wore it into the ground! The letters from Ontario college of Art hanging by a thread. Found in a bag in the basement after dad passed. Smelling of mold and mildew. We started by having it specialty cleaned with an ozone treatment to minimize the smell. Done in stages just in case the smell didn’t come out we would stop the restoration there. It worked and then on to step 2. The recreation of the school name. We used a more modern technique of digitizing the school name as individual letters don’t exist anymore. While we waited for the art work and the letters to be recreated, we spent 4 weeks treating the leather with leather friendly oil to make it soft and supple. We then proceeded to reline with a very similar tartan lining to mimic the original. We remade the disintegrating cuffs as well. Added the back panel with the remade lettering and viola a new coat emerged. Quite the process but ultimately very successful. These are my favourite restoration projects. Keeping the family heirloom in the family and not the landfill. Allowing the memory of dad to live on into the future generations. We get quite a bit of reupholstery projects from clients who have lost a loved one. This was our clients father’s favourite chair. Not made originally from leather but from vinyl. After 40 years of use and a life well lived. We rebuilt it from scratch. Deconstructed to the base teak frame. We used the finest German imported leather and followed the original design exactly to produce an unparalleled result. The client was so pleased with the outcome and was able to honour his lost father in the process. These projects have so much heart and make me happy to go to work everyday!
