It is time to prepare a fence for an Ontario winter.

Once temperatures drop below 10°C, sealant won’t cure. Once the fall rains are fully underway, surface work becomes impractical. And once frost heave cycles begin, whatever is structurally weak in the fence is under load.

The pre-fall prep that matters: reseal boards and rails showing UV wear, seal end grain on bottom boards and gate corners, clear debris from the fence base, check post bases for early rot, tighten backed-out fasteners, test gate alignment. None of these take more than a few hours on a standard residential fence. All of them reduce what needs fixing in April.

Rot doesn’t announce itself. By the time it’s visible, it’s already been working for months.

The highest-risk locations on a residential fence are the same every time: post bases at ground line, bottom rails, bottom board end grain, and gate frame corners. These are the spots where moisture contact is highest and protective finish wears fastest.

Ontario’s fall shoulder season — alternating wet and dry periods before freeze-up — is one of the most damaging times of year for unprotected wood. Addressing exposed end grain and exhausted sealant in September, while temperatures are still above 10°C and the wood is dry enough to accept treatment, is what stops that damage from advancing underground over winter.

The ground around your fence posts matters just as much as the posts themselves.

As Ontario’s fall rain season arrives, drainage around post bases becomes one of the biggest factors in fence longevity. A post sitting in a low point that holds water after every rain is being saturated through the entire freeze-thaw season — the most damaging period of the year for wood at ground level.

Before fall rains are fully underway, check whether water is pooling near your post bases after rain. Clear any mulch or soil buildup from the fence base. Make sure the grade around each post slopes away from the fence line, not toward it. And clear leaf accumulation regularly through September and October — decomposing leaves hold moisture against wood for days after rain stops.

The most expensive fence repair is the one that could have been caught six months earlier.

Preventive care for an Ontario fence isn’t complicated. Keep the base of your boards clear of soil and mulch buildup — anything that holds moisture against the wood at ground level accelerates rot at the most vulnerable point. Keep the bottom board at least 50mm above grade.
Reseal boards showing surface greying before the UV damage moves deeper. Replace backed-out fasteners before boards start moving. Check gate hardware once a season and lubricate before it binds. None of these take more than an hour. All of them add years.

A wood fence in Ontario should last fifteen years. Most that fail early don’t fail because of bad materials. They fail because of skipped maintenance.

August is the best time to walk your fence. Here’s exactly what to look for.

The ground is stable, the wood is dry, and any issues from spring or early summer are fully visible. Before fall moisture and colder temperatures arrive, run through this in order:

• Posts: sight down the fence line for lean, then push each post at the top. Movement at the base is rot or a shallow set.
• Rails: check for backed-out fasteners, mid-span sag, and splits at the post connection.
• Boards: surface greying and fine cracks are a sealant issue. Deep splits and warping mean replacement.
• Gates: test the swing and latch. A gate that drags in August has been off since spring.
• Hardware: check hinges for rust and wear. Lubricate with a dry lubricant, not oil.

A gate that binds in July was probably installed wrong in April.
Gate misalignment in summer heat is one of the most common callbacks in residential fencing — and almost always traces back to hardware installed with no tolerance for thermal movement. The gate didn’t fail. The installation didn’t account for the fact that the frame, the posts, and the hardware are all expanding at slightly different rates on a 35°C afternoon.

The gap between fence boards isn’t an oversight. It’s a calculation.
Every material expands in heat. Wood swells across the grain. Vinyl grows along its full run length. Without adequate spacing built in at installation, those boards and panels have nowhere to go when July hits. The result is buckling, bowing, and gate misalignment that looks like a material failure — but is actually a spacing problem.
For wood, 3–6mm between boards handles seasonal movement without creating visible gaps. For vinyl, 6–10mm at each panel end inside the post channel is standard for a full GTA run. For ornamental metal, rail and panel connections need enough play to absorb linear expansion without concentrating stress at the post.
