Your garage door talks to you before it breaks. Most people just turn up the radio and hope it goes away. 😅

Here's how to translate:

⚙️ Grinding → Rollers or bearings are shot. Metal dragging on metal. Keep running it and you'll chew up the tracks too.

💥 One loud bang, then nothing → Your torsion spring snapped. Don't try to lift the door. It's now unsupported and genuinely dangerous.

🎵 Squealing → Dry hinges and rollers. Usually the cheapest fix on this list — but ignore it long enough and it turns into grinding.

🔩 Popping or snapping → Loose hardware or a section binding. Panels are flexing where they shouldn't. Often an alignment problem that gets worse fast.

🔌 Humming but the door won't move → The opener has power but can't lift. It's straining against a broken spring or a seized door. Stop pressing the button — you'll burn out the motor.

The pattern here: small noises become big repairs. A $150 roller job today is a $1,800 door replacement in two years. Catching it early is always cheaper.

🛤️ Rusted right through — track replacement in Stittsville ✅

Years of moisture and road salt had eaten through the vertical track and its mounting bracket on this door. Debris packed in behind it, the surface pitted with rust, and rollers dragging their way up and down every single cycle.

We stripped it out and installed new galvanized track with fresh brackets mounted into sound framing. Set square, aligned to spec, and tested before we left.

**Why track rust matters more than it looks:**

Rollers need a smooth surface to travel on. Once rust starts pitting the track, they stop gliding and start fighting — which puts extra load on the opener, wears the rollers out faster, and makes the whole door noisier.

Worse, corroded track loses structural strength. A weak section can let a roller jump the rail, and once that happens you're looking at a much bigger repair than a length of track.

**Worth checking on your own door:**
• Visible rust or flaking on the vertical track
• Grinding or scraping as the door moves
• Debris and leaves built up at the base of the track
• Door hesitating or catching at the same spot every time

Caught early, this is a straightforward fix. Left alone, it takes the rollers and sometimes the opener with it.

🛒 Shopping for a new garage door? Check these 5 things before you sign anything.

Most quotes look similar on paper. The differences are in the details — and those details are what decide whether your door still runs well in ten years or gives you trouble in three.

**1. R-Value (insulation)**
Know the number you're getting. R-16 to R-18 is the sweet spot for most Ottawa homes, especially with living space above the garage. Anything advertised as "insulated" without a number attached is worth asking about.

**2. Steel gauge**
This one trips people up: a lower number means thicker steel. So 24-gauge is more dent-resistant than 26-gauge, even though it sounds backwards. Ask which one you're being quoted.

**3. Spring cycle rating**
Make sure your springs are rated for at least 10,000 cycles. A cheaper door often hides a cheaper spring — and that's the part you'll be paying to replace years sooner than you should. It's rarely listed on the quote unless you ask.

**4. Warranty terms**
Read what's actually covered. Panels, hardware, springs and finish frequently carry very different lengths of coverage. "Lifetime warranty" almost never means the whole door.

**5. Who does the install**
The best door in the world installed badly is a bad door. Ask whether it's the company's own technicians or a subcontractor — and who you call if something isn't right six months later.
