Did you know that high-efficiency doesn’t mean low performance? Water-efficient products are designed to use less water while still doing the job properly. Below are some ways you can cut your high water bills down... and your energy, too!

1. ENERGY STAR dishwashers use about 30% less water and 12% less energy than standard models, on average.

2. Your washing machine can make a big difference. ENERGY STAR-certified clothes washers use about 33% less water and 25% less energy than standard models, on average.

3. Low-flow shower heads use less water and therefore less hot water, which means your water heater has less work to do. Canada’s current efficiency regulations for newly manufactured shower heads set a maximum flow rate of 6.8 L/min.

4. Your bathroom fixtures can be surprisingly efficient. NRCan recommends water-saving fixtures such as 4.8 L/flush-or-less toilets, shower heads using less than 7.0 L/min, and bathroom faucet aerators delivering less than 4.7 L/min.

5. A modern low-flow toilet can use 4.8 litres or less per flush. If you're replacing an older, high-volume toilet, that can make a noticeable difference in household water use.

6. Your faucet may be using more water than necessary. Canada's current federal efficiency requirements limit private lavatory faucets to 4.7 L/min, while kitchen faucets are limited to 7.0 L/min, with a temporary higher-flow option under specified conditions.

7. Saving water can also save energy. Whenever you use less hot water, your water heater has less water to heat. That means water-efficient fixtures and appliances can help reduce both water consumption and the energy required to heat that water.

This heavily clogged sediment filter was doing exactly what it was designed to do -catching dirt, silt and other particles before they could make their way through the home’s plumbing. But when a sediment filter gets this dirty, it can also restrict water flow and reduce your water pressure.

Your filter is there to protect your plumbing and your water, but it needs a little attention, too! If you're noticing reduced water pressure, cloudy water, or you're constantly replacing a clogged filter, it may be time to have your water filtration system checked.

Fall Plumbing Tips for Homeowners 🍂

Disconnect your garden hoses: Leaving hoses connected can trap water in the outdoor faucet and increase the risk of freeze damage.

Check your outdoor taps: Look for dripping, leaking, or reduced water pressure. A damaged hose bib can allow water to freeze inside the plumbing.

Know where your main water shut-off is: If a pipe bursts, knowing how to quickly shut off the water can help minimize damage.

Check for slow drains: A slow drain is often an early warning sign of a partial blockage. Taking care of it now can help prevent a full backup later.

Test your sump pump: Fall rain can mean increased groundwater. Make sure your sump pump is working properly and check that the discharge line is clear.

Check for leaks around your water heater: Look for puddles, moisture, corrosion, or unusual noises. Small warning signs can turn into bigger problems.

Inspect exposed pipes: Check pipes in unheated areas like garages, crawlspaces, and basements for damage or inadequate insulation before temperatures drop.

Check your toilet for leaks: A running or constantly refilling toilet can waste a surprising amount of water and increase your bill.

Clean out your drains: Fall is a good time to address recurring clogs before holiday cooking, guests, and increased household use put extra demand on your plumbing.

From a Leaking Bathroom to Peace of Mind 🚽 🚿

Every time the upstairs bathroom was used, wastewater was finding its way into this customer’s beautiful family room... definitely not what anyone wants to deal with!

After inspecting the issue, we found that the old copper drainage piping needed to be replaced. Our team removed the damaged piping and replaced it with new ABS pipe and fittings, creating a reliable drainage system once again.

Now, this family can use their upstairs bathroom with confidence and enjoy their family room without worrying about another unexpected leak.
