In 1997,at Dover Bay Secondary School, in Nanaimo BC, I was caught loitering in the locker bay.
“Go to class” says the hall monitor.
“I don’t have a class. I have a spare.” I respond immediately, as I am creatively drawing on my paper pad.
“There’s no such thing as a spare” says the monitor.
“Here! As I show my paper schedule to them, as an Honour Roll and Principal’s List Grade 12 student.
“Oh!”
The fact of the matter, is that I had taken all shop classes, automotive, construction, and woodworking classes offered. All electives and academics had been excelled in and completed.
The solution we came up with, is as follows.
Since I was adamant about avoiding drama class, as that’s what “they” were steering me in the direction of, I became a peer tutor for the younger grades.
My curriculum was to build whatever I desired.
Two of the “graded” projects included a hand-made cedar-strip canoe and this little pre-fab gig.
Thanks for all the lessons Rick!
It amazes me to think of where I would be, and what I would have built for people, had I not invested 20 years into the Horticulture field.
