You never really know how a raw piece will transform colour-wise when you apply finish. Padauk goes from orange to various reds when mineral oil is applied. Use polyurethane or shellac and the orange shines through.

I love using padauk for Valentine’s Day, Hallowe’en and for some Christmas items and wavy Canadian flags. I vary the finish based on what I am looking for.

This guy came out a deep, dark red. Pretty cool!

* I completely didn’t think about the fact my CNC machine was running making another flag while recording this. I guess now you know what it sounds like to make one of these!

Next stop: the second annual Carleton Place Beer Festival this coming Friday between 4pm and 10pm.

It was a heck of an event last year - and a successful sale as a craft vendor - I can’t wait to see how it goes again this year. It’s been held at the Farmers Market in downtown Carleton Place.

See you there! Last minute Father’s Day gifts, Canada Day themed items and, of course, some beer themed items will be available!

New meets old! Instead of sticking your phone in a bowl on the kitchen counter (or elsewhere) to use physics to get more volume out of your cell phone, how about you get yourself (or someone special in your life) a passive cell phone amplifier.

It isn’t a Bluetooth device that eats at your phone’s battery life - it uses the shape of the amplifier and its opening (or “speaker”) to give you the extra oomph and maybe even a bit more bass too.

To jazz it up, I’ve made it your amplifier look like an old time transistor radio! I can also engrave ANYTHING ELSE you might on it too.

$35 and one can be yours. I have some on hand - it isn’t too late to get one for Father’s Day. I have one walnut and five carved out of 50 year old Brazilian pine.

July 1st is around the corner, but it’s Canada Day every day these days, eh? 😉

I can set you up with a neat maple leaf catch-all tray you can use to protect your table top from keys, change and whatnot - they’re $40… or you can hang a nifty Canadian flag on your wall for $55 (stay tuned for some of the redder variety - they’re out of stock but I’m making four more this week).

To round out my Canada collection, I have some Canadian flag slate coasters - $5 a piece.

After selling my last “transistor radio” passive phone amplifier (it makes your modern cell phone sound much louder when you insert it in the slot on top) the other day, I’m in the shop making new ones for my sales next month and adding to my website.

I never took photos of the first dozen, nor took a video of one in action. I must remember to do that once these are glued together, finished and laser engraved!! 😳
