One question we get a lot:
“Is the wood actually that colour?”

Yep.

Some wood species naturally bring colours to the shop you might not expect — including purple.

Purpleheart is known for developing those rich purple tones after the wood is cut and exposed to light and air.

Freshly cut, it can actually look more brown before the colour begins to change.

And like all natural wood, that colour won't necessarily stay exactly the same forever.

Light, age and exposure can gradually shift and deepen the tone.

No purple stain required.

That's part of what we love about working with different species — sometimes the wood does the showing off for us.

Most finished pieces start the same way — rough lumber, sawdust, clamps and a bit of a mess.

Before you see the grain pop and the finish go on, there’s measuring, cutting, fitting, gluing, sanding… and usually a whole lot of patience.

That’s the part of the process we like just as much as the finished piece.

Back to school looked a little different in our shop. 😏

No pencils. No notebooks. Just a pile of wood, a few tools and an idea.

From building blocks to Batman, sometimes the best projects are the ones that are just plain fun to make.

We spend a lot of time talking about craftsmanship, quality and the details that go into our work — but at the end of the day, we’re still a couple of guys who really enjoy making cool stuff out of wood.

With back-to-school around the corner, we figured this one deserved another trip out of the archives.

If you've been wanting to see our work in person, you can now find a selection of Baker Street Studios pieces at J-Bird Apothecary in Red Deer.

We've stocked the shop with a variety of handcrafted pieces from chop sticks to cutting boards, and it's a great place to see the wood grain, feel the finish, and find a piece that speaks to you.
