This stage may not look as exciting as the finished deck photo, but it is one of the most important parts of the build.

Another project ready to go. The materials are here, the plan is in place and the space is about to start taking shape.

At HDD Red Deer, this is part of what makes deck building so rewarding.

Every project starts as a pile of materials and turns into a future spot for morning coffee, family dinners, BBQs, summer evenings, and a few well-earned quiet moments outside.

Looking forward to seeing this one come together 🍂

Another Central Alberta project getting underway.

We’ve had a great summer meeting homeowners, planning projects and getting decks underway across Red Deer and Central Alberta.

This week, we’re starting another project — beginning with site preparation and layout before construction gets underway.

There is still time for some projects this fall, and it is also a great time to start planning for spring. Getting an early start gives us time to talk through your ideas, look at materials, review the site and prepare a clear plan before construction season arrives.

Thinking about a new deck, stairs, railings or an update to your existing outdoor space?

We’d be happy to talk through your ideas.

BEFORE YOU BUILD: What affects the cost of a deck?

Square footage is only one part of the calculation.

The cost of a deck can also be affected by:

• Deck height and foundation requirements
• Stairs and landings
• Railings and privacy screens
• Material and colour selection
• Demolition and disposal
• Access to the backyard
• Permits or engineering requirements
• The complexity of the layout

Two decks with the same square footage can have very different construction requirements — and very different costs.

That is why a site visit and a clear discussion about how you want to use the space are important parts of preparing an accurate estimate.

Will your deck require a permit?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Will your deck require a permit?
The answer can depend on the deck’s height, location, size and the requirements of your municipality.
Property setbacks, utility locations, foundations, guards and stairs may also affect the design. In some situations, a development permit or additional documentation may be required.
Looking at these requirements early can help avoid redesigns and unexpected delays later.
When we prepare a formal proposal, we can also discuss the permits and approvals that may apply to the project.

BEFORE YOU BUILD: Why do stair stringers and risers matter?
The angled supports beneath the stair treads are called stringers. They carry the weight of the staircase and the people using it, making their spacing and construction important to the strength and feel of the stairs.

The vertical spaces between the treads are called risers. Stairs may have open risers, or they may be finished with riser boards for a more enclosed appearance.

Closed risers can help conceal the framing and create a solid, finished look. Open risers offer a lighter appearance and may be chosen as part of the overall design. Either style must be properly planned and constructed.

Some stair details are structural. Others are aesthetic—but both contribute to how the finished staircase looks, feels and performs.

Glass or picket railing?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Glass or aluminum picket railing?
Black aluminum pickets provide a clean, timeless appearance and generally require very little maintenance.
Glass railings help preserve the view and can make a deck feel more open, but they require more frequent cleaning.
Both can work well. The decision often comes down to the view, privacy, maintenance expectations and the style of the home.
Which would you choose for your deck—glass or pickets?

What is beneath the boards?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: What is holding up your deck?
The finished boards and railings get most of the attention, but a deck’s long-term performance begins underneath.
Foundations, beams, joists, blocking, connections and proper spacing all contribute to the strength and stability of the finished structure.
This is also why replacing old boards is not always as simple as installing new material over the existing frame. The structure must be suitable for the decking selected.
A good deck should look right above the surface—and be built properly below it.

Wood, composite or PVC?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Wood, composite or PVC?
Pressure-treated wood generally has the lowest initial cost, but it requires ongoing maintenance.
Composite decking offers lower maintenance, many colours and a range of price points.
PVC decking provides excellent moisture resistance and long-term outdoor performance, usually at a higher initial cost.
There is no single material that is right for every homeowner. The best choice depends on your budget, preferred appearance and maintenance expectations.

Resurface or rebuild?
BEFORE YOU BUILD: Can an older deck be resurfaced?
Sometimes—but new deck boards should not be installed over a structure simply because it is still standing.
Before recommending resurfacing, we look at the framing, joist spacing, connections, stairs and foundations. Some structures can be reused or repaired. Others should be rebuilt before new decking is installed.
Why does this matter? Low-maintenance deck boards may last for decades, but they still depend on the structure beneath them.
