60 years ago today, Prince George was getting ready to welcome a new landmark.
On July 29, 1966, The Prince George Citizen published this special full-page feature introducing Camelot Restaurant . While the newspaper is dated July 29, it was actually promoting the motel's grand opening that weekend.
For Prince George in the mid-1960s, Camelot Court represented modern travel.
The advertisements proudly showcased a year-round heated indoor swimming pool, a feature that was a genuine luxury at the time. The motel also offered apartment-style units with kitchenettes, making it ideal for families, business travellers, and anyone spending more than a night or two in the city.
What makes this newspaper page especially interesting is how many local businesses came together to celebrate the opening. Painters, flooring suppliers, cabinet makers, concrete companies, equipment dealers, furniture suppliers, and insurance firms all placed congratulatory ads. It was a reminder that when a new business opened in Prince George, the whole community took pride in helping make it happen.
And here's the best part of the story...
Sixty years later, Camelot Court is still welcoming guests. Its restaurant has become a destination in its own right, earning a loyal following for hearty meals, generous portions, and the kind of comfort food that keeps people coming back.
