There is always something to be grateful for.

Even when life is handing you one fkn lesson after another.

Gratitude doesn’t mean we have to appreciate everything we’re going through. But we can simply recognizing that the hard thing isn’t the ONLY thing happening in our lives.

And the more we deliberately practise noticing and actually FEELING what’s good, the more we strengthen our ability to direct our attention instead of getting caught in the same familiar stress patterns.

Those little reps matter. That’s how we begin changing our relationship with our thoughts, our nervous system, and ultimately, our experience of life.

You don’t have to wait for life to get easier to experience more of its goodness.

You’re seeing the reps.

I know Kevin doesn’t just stand up there and strum a guitar, but hearing him explain everything that’s happening in his brain while he’s playing kind of blew my mind.

He’s playing guitar. Singing. Playing drums (with his feet!). Whistling. Reading the room. Choosing from something like 700 songs based on who’s there and what they’re responding to. And because he rarely stops between songs, he’s apparently also doing some kind of fu***ng musical algebra to figure out what can seamlessly come next. 😂

All while making it look like he’s just… playing music.

But he wasn’t always able to do this.

He built it.

Years of playing. Learning songs. Reading rooms. Getting it wrong. Doing it again.

Reps.

And those reps created capacity.

I think we forget this when we see someone who’s really good at something. We see the ability, not everything that created it.

Same same for confidence, boundaries, self-trust, regulation, staying grounded under pressure.

You practice noticing yourself. You practice pausing. You practice speaking up. You practice making the full ask. You practice keeping promises to yourself. You practice coming back when you don’t.

Eventually, what once required so much of you becomes something you can hold alongside everything else.

Not because it magically became easy.

Because you put in the fu***ng reps.

Grateful for inspiration like Kevin

You probably already know.

That’s the annoying part.

You know which commitment makes your whole body tense when you see it on the calendar.

You know which relationship you keep having the same conversation about.

You know which expectation you’re exhausted from trying to meet.

You know where you keep telling yourself to try a little harder, give it a little longer, figure out a better way.

And maybe you’ve been waiting for something to happen that makes the decision obvious.

Something big enough that you can finally say, 'See? NOW I’m allowed to stop.'

It's ok to simply realize that you don’t want to spend another season of your life tending this.

I’ve been sitting with that question in my own life

There are things I’ve poured tremendous amounts of care, energy and time into that I don’t regret for a second.

They belonged. They mattered.

And I can feel that some of them don’t belong in the same way anymore. (listen to todays podcast EP 99 for more on that).

I used to think clarity would mean knowing exactly what should replace them.

Instead, I’m finding a completely different kind of clarity in being willing to say:
..I don’t know what comes next. I just know I don’t want to keep abandoning what I know now....

That’s the work underneath the breathwork experience I’m facilitating next Sunday (09/27).

Workshop, journalling, then move through a breathwork experience, and integrate what surfaced.

This is usually held inside The Deliberate Practice, but I’m opening a few spots to non-members for $20.

Sunday, September 27 · 1pm EST (Virtual)
$20 drop-in

I hate making coffee in the morning.

Like throwing out the old coffee grinds, filling up the water, getting everything ready. I don't know why, but I just hate doing it first thing in the morning.

So most of the time I do it the night before.

Last night I was getting ready for bed and wondered if Kev had already done it.

And then I noticed that I didn't want to go check.

Because if he hadn't done it, then I would have to.

Which is so fu***ng ridiculous because we're talking about making coffee.

I had the time. It takes me what, two minutes?

But I was legitimately avoiding even CHECKING because I didn't want to have to do it.

And then I'm thinking, okay, well, I can just leave it until the morning.

Except I hate doing it in the morning.

So now I'm creating the exact situation I don't want to be in tomorrow because I don't feel like spending two minutes doing something tonight.

Have you ever wondered…

Is this normal?

Is it normal that I still think about drinking sometimes even though I know my life is better without it?

Is it normal that some social situations still feel weird?

Is it normal to miss parts of my old life AND not want it back?

Is it normal that quitting drinking didn’t magically fix everything?

Is it normal that I’m changing and some of my relationships aren’t changing with me?

Is it normal that I don’t really know who I am without some of the things I used to do?

Am I the only one who feels like this?

This is one of the reasons community is so important when you’re sober, sober-curious, or questioning your relationship with alcohol.

Because sometimes you don’t need another tool.

You need to sit in a room with other women and hear:

“Oh my god. Me too.”

You need somewhere you can ask the question you’ve been quietly wondering about.

Somewhere you can talk about the weird, uncomfortable, amazing, lonely, exciting parts of changing your life with people who actually understand what you’re talking about.

That’s what our Wednesday Community Call is for.

We’re not sitting around talking about alcohol for an hour.

We’re talking about life ... relationships, stress, identity, boundaries, work, emotions, habits, the hard s**t, the good s**t, and what happens when you’re trying to navigate all of it without automatically reaching for a drink.

And it’s completely free.

Every Wednesday at 8PM EST on Zoom.

If you’re a woman who’s sober, sober-curious, or questioning your relationship with alcohol, you’re welcome here.

Facilitated by a certified coach (me) with 6.5 years of continuous sobriety and a very real understanding of what life after drinking actually looks like.

Comment COMMUNITY and I’ll send you the details.

I spent a lot of years confusing how much I could force myself or push myself to handle with how much capacity I actually had.

Turns out, those are two very different things.

You can be high-capacity, resilient and really fu***ng good at pushing through annnnnnd still be overriding your nervous system, your needs and yourself.

I’m learning to ask a different question now:

Not can I handle this?

Do I actually have capacity for this?

A big part of rebuilding my life has been learning the difference.

Also if you know the song lyric I spoke… can you remind me?!?

EP 94: What Happens After You Do the Hard Thing?

Comment EP 94 and I’ll send it to you.
