Some projects stay with you long after the tools are packed away.
What started as an addition and deck project for John and Kimberly became something much more meaningful. Before the renovation, their back deck was difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, limiting how comfortably they could enjoy their own outdoor space. We designed and built a wheelchair-accessible ramp and completed an addition that created a more suitable living space for Kimberly’s needs and daily comfort.
As the project progressed, I got to know John well. I gave him one of our company toques, a ball cap, and a sweater — and he wore them proudly. He would often stop us during the workday to share stories from his working years, memories from the past, and lessons from a lifetime of experience. Those conversations became one of the best parts of the job.
Near the end of the project, seeing John and Kimberly sitting outside together enjoying a b**r on their new deck made all the hard work worth it. Knowing they’ll now be able to enjoy their home, their property, and the spring and summer months more comfortably is something I’m proud to have been part of.
Projects like this are a reminder that construction is not just about building structures — it’s about improving people’s lives and creating spaces where memories can continue to be made
