🕯️ 100 Years of History, 4 Bathrooms, 1 Brand-New Underground System

We just wrapped an underground plumbing on a historic 100-year-old home in downtown Ottawa — and trust us, this one had some stories to tell.

👻 The challenge: A century-old cast iron waste system under a charming (but spooky) downtown Ottawa heritage home. Four bathrooms, 2 stair cases and decades of patched repairs

🔧 What we did:

Excavated the basement floor to access the old building drain

Removed the original cast iron plumbing

Installed a brand-new ABS DWV system that meets modern code

Added a backwater valve to protect against city sewer backups

Repiped the entire underground rough-in for all four bathrooms

Why it matters: When you own an older home in Ottawa's downtown core, plumbing isn't just plumbing — it's archaeology, engineering, and patience rolled into one. A 100-year-old house deserves a system that'll last another 100 years.

Thinking about a bathroom reno in Orléans or anywhere in Ottawa? A common question we get is whether to go with matte black or brushed nickel fixtures.

Both look great : but they give different results once they’re installed.

Matte Black
This is the modern look everyone’s going for right now. Clean, bold, and “spa-style” when it’s done right. It really stands out in newer bathrooms, especially if you’re going for a more high-end finish. Just keep in mind it shows wear a bit more if you’re not careful with cleaning.

Brushed Nickel
This is the safer, more timeless option. It works in any home, especially older houses around Ottawa and Orléans. It hides water spots better and is easier to live with day to day, which is why many families still go with it.

Quick tip:
Don’t use harsh cleaners on either finish : especially matte black. A soft cloth and mild soap is all you need. We’ve seen a lot of good fixtures get ruined by the wrong products.
