Early fall is a great time to start planning kitchen cabinetry upgrades. 🍂 Getting started now means we can help you create a cozy, functional kitchen before the busy holiday season sneaks up.

Upgrading your cabinets in early fall also helps avoid those last-minute delays that often come with winter projects. It’s the perfect way to make sure your kitchen is ready for gatherings, cooking, and everyday comfort as the weather cools down.

Let’s get your kitchen set for the season—reach out to book a consultation!

Most homeowners walk into our shop thinking a custom kitchen takes two, maybe three weeks to build. Production alone runs four to eight.

That gap catches people off guard, and we get it. Big box timelines and renovation shows have trained everyone to expect fast. But a true custom kitchen isn't pulled off a shelf. It's drawn to your walls, cut from slabs we've selected for grain and colour, joined, sanded, finished, and cured before a single door ever hangs in your home.

Depending on the size of the project, that production window sits between four and eight weeks. Installation comes after that. Design, material sourcing, and template work happen before it.

The homeowners who love their finished kitchens the most are almost always the ones who started the conversation early. Not because they were in a rush, but because they gave the process the room it needed to be done properly 🪵

If you're thinking about a 2027 renovation in North Vancouver, now is a good time to talk. The wood doesn't hurry, and neither should the plan.

Stock cabinets come in 3-inch increments. Your kitchen wall does not.

That's why almost every stock installation ends with a filler strip. A thin piece of wood covering the gap between the last cabinet and the wall. It looks like a small detail. It isn't.

Every filler strip is something you gave up. A corner cabinet that can't open fully because the run is 4 inches too long. A drawer bank that stops short of the window instead of wrapping around it. A pantry built 9 inches shallower than your wall actually allows, because the next stock size up wouldn't fit.

The savings on stock sizing are real at the register. What's harder to see is what you're paying for those savings in lost storage, awkward reaches, and dead space you'll live with for the next 20 years.

Custom cabinetry is built to the actual dimensions of your room. Not the nearest 3-inch increment. That means every inch of your wall becomes usable, and the run ends exactly where it should — flush, considered, and working as hard as the rest of the kitchen.

Most kitchen quotes tell you the door style and the finish colour. They rarely tell you what's actually inside the box.

That's where the real decisions live. Whether your boxes are plywood or particle board. Whether your painted doors are MDF or solid wood. Whether the veneer on that walnut island is a shortcut or the smarter long-term choice. These are the details that decide how your kitchen looks in year eight, not year one.

North Vancouver's climate makes this even more important. Moisture near sinks, dishwashers, and exterior walls will find any weak spot in a poorly built cabinet, and the finish you choose matters as much as the substrate underneath it.

Two kitchens. Same shaker doors, same brushed nickel pulls, same soft-close glides. A client stood in our showroom last year and asked which one was "better made." From the outside, honestly, they looked identical.

Three years on, only one of them still has drawers that close flush.

The difference lives where nobody looks: the box itself. One was built from plywood. The other from particleboard. And here's the proof clue you can test in your own kitchen tonight. Run your finger along the inside corner of a drawer box and press gently on the screw zone. Plywood holds firm. Particleboard gives slightly, and the screw hole has already started to widen around the fastener.

That widening is what turns a crisp drawer front into one that sags a quarter inch below its neighbour. In a North Vancouver family home with wet coats, humid bathrooms, and drawers that get yanked open a dozen times a day, plywood boxes hold their geometry. They grip screws. They shrug off moisture. Particleboard, over time, does neither.

This is one of the few places where the upgrade cost is small and the long-term difference is huge. Ballpark, plywood boxes add roughly 10 to 15 percent to the cabinetry line of a kitchen budget. For most of our clients, it's the easiest yes in the whole build.

Go check your drawers. Then let us know what you find 🪵

The kitchen photos that still look good ten years later weren't lucky with trends. They got the fundamentals right before anyone picked a paint chip.

We've walked through a lot of North Vancouver kitchens, and the ones that age well share the same three decisions. None of them are about colour.

Swipe through for the three we ask every client to think about first: the box behind the door, where your daily items actually live, and how the finish is applied (not just what shade it is).

Get these right and the aesthetic choices become the fun part instead of the risky part. Questions about any of them? Drop them below, we'll answer honestly. 🌲

A client once asked us to "basically do what IKEA does, but in a different colour." We get why it sounds the same. It isn't.

Flat-pack cabinetry is a great product for what it is: standardized boxes, cam-lock assembly, particleboard cores wrapped in melamine, sized to fit a catalog. When you buy one, you're adapting your room to the cabinet.

Custom is the opposite. Every box is built to the exact dimensions of your room, down to the quarter inch. The materials get chosen for the job the cabinet actually has to do. Marine-grade plywood near the sink where moisture lives. Reinforced shelving in the pantry that's going to hold twenty pounds of canned goods without sagging in five years. Solid hardwood face frames in the mudroom because kids, dogs, and wet boots don't care how pretty something is.

Then there's the joinery. Dovetailed drawer boxes, mortise-and-tenon frames, glued and clamped construction meant to hold up for decades, not until the next move.

So when we quote a project and the number lands higher than expected, it isn't a markup on nicer doors. It's a different product category. One is furniture you assemble. The other is built into your home. Both have their place. They're just not the same thing. 🪵

A homeowner called us last month to swap out her painted MDF shaker doors for solid wood. She assumed MDF was the budget compromise she'd inherited from the previous owner and wanted the "real" upgrade.

We brought her into the shop and showed her a painted solid wood door pulled from a four-year-old kitchen. The paint had cracked in fine lines along every grain, tiny fractures where the wood moved with the seasons. Her MDF doors, same age, still looked factory-fresh.

Here's the test you can run yourself at home. Hold a painted door up to a window with the light raking across the surface at a 45-degree angle. On solid wood, you'll see the grain telegraphing through the paint. Small ridges, seasonal movement, permanent. On MDF, the surface reads perfectly flat.

For painted doors specifically, MDF is the better material. It takes paint more evenly, it stays dimensionally stable through Vancouver's wet winters and dry summers, and it doesn't fight the finish over time. The real risk with MDF is poor sealing near sinks and dishwashers. Solve that with proper edge sealing and it outperforms solid wood on painted work every time.

We still love solid wood for stained doors where the grain is the whole point. But if you're going painted, don't let anyone tell you MDF is the downgrade. It's the right tool for the job.

Most kitchen reno regrets we hear about aren't really about the cabinets. They're about decisions made too early, or decisions that never got made at all.

After years of building custom kitchens for North Vancouver homeowners, we've noticed the smoothest projects all have one thing in common: the homeowner walked in with three things already nailed down.

Layout. Finish. Timeline.

Get those right before production starts and the rest tends to fall into place. Skip them, and you'll spend the build phase second-guessing choices you should have made months earlier.
