This was a special one for me. This was a cowboy job out in the country, that’s part of what made it special. The logs were a real challenge, it ain't perfect but by golly it turned out good overall!
If somebody told me 6 months ago when I started this business, that I was going to get this opportunity. I would have shrugged it off or laughed. It’s a mix of old and new. In more ways than one. The deck is from scratch other than the concrete footers.
I’ve had the amazing privilege of having the full experience with these logs. The logs came off the same property that this house is on. Quite literally in the backyard. I selected, harvested, dragged, peeled and cut these logs myself. I had no milling equipment to process them other than the chainsaw. Which is now my new favorite carpentry tool!
Getting to include some masonry was a very nice touch as well, all the stones are from the property and very nearby! Working with the raw materials makes me feel a little closer to how our forefathers used to build. Days before the hardware store and electric tools. Even with access to those things and this job being a mix of old and new techniques, doing the traditional log notches gives me a great appreciation for the patience, skill and work ethic they had in the old days. Back when all they had was maybe a few hand tools.
It has become abundantly clear that I am supposed to do my part MAINTAINING the heritage crafts and it’s skills. This job has given me so much direction for the way my business is supposed to grow. I’m supposed to help keep the history alive and work with the beauty of nature in all it’s chaotic and raw glory.
I could not have asked for a more epic project for myself, especially in my first year of business. It exceeded all my expectations and taught me so much! Thank you a million times over to the homeowner for the opportunity, I won’t ever forget this one!
