PEC House is getting closer.

It’s been a few years since we first started designing this house, so seeing it at this stage of construction is particularly exciting.

Right now, we’re working through the final exterior siding selections while construction continues inside. These later decisions matter. The siding profile, colour, transitions and how it meets the other exterior materials all affect how the architecture ultimately reads once the house is built.

I’ll be heading back to Prince Edward County soon to see the progress in person and share a closer look at how it’s coming together.

The cathedral ceiling was part of the architectural design of the home from the beginning, carrying the modern Tudor character into the principal suite.

We introduced subtle wood beams here as a continuation of the beams in the dining room below. They add warmth and some interest overhead, while creating a connection between two very different spaces in the house.

It’s one of those details that makes more sense when you experience the home as a whole.

A closer look at the shower at Project Foundry. Our clients wanted this bathroom to be as low-maintenance as possible, which was one of the reasons we chose large-format tile. Fewer grout lines means less to clean, particularly in the shower.

We carried the same tile across the walls and into the niches, keeping the number of material changes to a minimum. The matte black fixtures add some contrast against an otherwise fairly simple palette.

A small detail, but one that comes back to how our clients wanted to use and maintain the space.🤎

Renderings give our clients an early look at where the design is heading, but there is a lot of work between these images and the finished space.

Details evolve, decisions are made on site, and some things inevitably change along the way. What I love seeing here is how clearly the original direction carried through to the finished home.

A closer look at the under-stair storage at Project Foundry.

In this Reel, Sacha walks through what was here before, why we decided to enclose the original open-riser staircase, and how that change allowed us to add much-needed storage near the front entry.

It’s a good example of how one change to the layout ended up solving several problems at once.

The goal for this bathroom was simple. Our clients wanted a space that felt calm, had more natural light, and was easy to maintain.

We kept the existing footprint and focused our attention on the things that weren’t working. Large-format tile meant fewer grout lines to clean, while the lighter palette helped make much better use of the natural light coming into the room. Warm wood keeps the space from feeling too stark.

And the bathtub was staying. Our clients wanted somewhere they could actually slow down at the end of the day, so it remained an important part of the room.

Another corner of Project Foundry where we were able to make much better use of the space.

Our clients had an extensive book collection without anywhere to properly keep it, so we used the full height of the wall to create a floor-to-ceiling bookcase.

We also relocated the home office here from its original spot beneath the stairs. It gave the office a quieter place within the loft and freed up the main floor for the storage we added at the front entry.

Now the books have somewhere to live, the office has a proper home, and the space under the stairs is doing an entirely different job.

Project Foundry’s new walk-in closet. Storage was a priority throughout this renovation, and the principal closet was no exception.

We introduced a combination of closed cabinetry and open shelving, giving our clients plenty of room to keep things organized without making the space feel overly full.

Integrated lighting makes the shelving much more useful and adds a bit of warmth against the white millwork.

The green office at Project Foundry.

Our clients had a growing collection of books and objects from their travels, but very little space to actually keep or display them.

We designed the millwork around that collection, with open shelving for the pieces they wanted to see and plenty of closed storage for everything else.

The green was a departure from the lighter, more neutral palette throughout much of the loft, and I love that it gives this room its own identity for our client to work from home and enjoy his new library.
