Your hardscape foundation is the most crucial part of your investment. If it is not done correctly, it is an imminent failure.

If you are getting hardscape work done this year, here are some questions to ask your contractor about:

1. Sub-grade preparation: How many compaction passes do you do for the sub-soil? (Especially if the soil is on the softer side) It should be 2 passes minimum for harder soil and 3+ for softer soil.

2. What base materials are you using? This is very important! If they are using any kind of sand or screening, automatic red flag! These materials hold water and cause heaving during freeze-thaw cycles.

3. What kind of warranty do you provide for the workmanship? Now this may vary from company to company however, the warranty should generally cover any heaving and sinking or drainage issues caused by improper installation. If they reply with “The stones carry a lifetime warranty”, be weary as they are do***ng the question.
